A couple of years ago, Pixar announced that Henry Selick was making a film about shadows. Yet Dreamworks announced they were making a similar plot to this.

If you don't mind me asking, who is Henry Selick? Is he someone who works at Pixar?

He's the one who worked for The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline.

Oh. Do you think you can post a link of that? I heard of Dreamworks shadow idea, but not of Pixar's.

Last I checked, Henry Selick is currently working on Wendell and Wild, which is separate from DreamWorks' Shadows. Selick's stop-motion film is about two demon brothers who face off against a nun and a pair of goth teens, whereas DreamWorks' CGI film is about a man and his shadow. The titles and plotlines for both films may change by the time they're released though, with DreamWorks' film slated for 2019 and Selick's to be determined.

OK, so this has been a story I have been following for 2 years, now, and it is the story of Henry Selick and his film at Pixar. So if you guys didn't know Henry Selick (acclaimed stop-motion director of The Nightmare Before Christmas Coraline), was brought into Pixar, after the huge release and success (critically and commercially) of Coraline, to make a stop-motion animated film for Pixar (which would be Pixar's very first stop-motion animated film). In 2010, Pixar signed a four-picture deal with Selick, to make four stop-motion animated films with them, and Selick even created his own joint venture with Pixar called Cinderbiter Productions (also known as Shademaker Productions), with it's sole purpose to create stop-motion films with Pixar. The first of the four was going to be called "The Shadow King", an original story created by Selick, about a young orphan in New York City, who has hands with unusually long fingers and he hides it from the other kids. When the child is taught how to make amazing hand shadows that come to life, they become weapons in a shadow war against a monster intent on killing the child's brother and New York City, as well. The film then entered pre-production in 2011, with an expected release date of October 2013.

The project was declined by Pixar, after Disney reportedly spent a budget of $50 million on it and had some concerns about future costs and benefits. After declining the film, Selick was given the option to shop the idea to other studios. As of now, there is very little information regarding what is going to happen to the Shadow King, except for the fact that Selick was able to find a distributor for the film in European Markets. Is it possible this film might go back to Laika, the studio that worked with Selick on Coraline and responsible in the past 5-6 years for some of the best stop-motion animated films. I don't know. But in unrelated news, Selick is currently working on another stop motion animated film "Wendell and Wild" about two demon brothers. It is based on an original idea by Selick and will star comedians Key & Peele. Although I am sad that we may never (or for a very long time) see Pixar do a stop-motion animated film, I can understand Disney's concerns.
