Pixar Post - T.J.
Just a quick note that the release date for The Incredibles 2 has swapped with Toy Story 4 (Pixar just announced it and we're working up a post right now). We'll update if they announce any additional info regarding the date switch.

Incredibles 2 was June 21, 2019 and is now June 15, 2018
Toy Story 4 was June 15, 2019 and is now June 21, 2019

Initial thoughts on Toy Story 4 being pushed back — hopefully this gives Lasseter more time to get it right! He's already so busy as CCO of both Pixar and Disney, and he had a rough time with Cars 2.

I really hope the production of the film doesn't end up like what to The Good Dinosaur. We'll let John get the film right and we'll enjoy it soon

They may be running into production issues. It's already been pushed back 2 years in the timespan of a year (the first delay was October 2015)

I'll save my defending TGD argument for another discussion but many great Pixar films have been pushed back. I know Finding Dory was originally announced for 2015 and I believe even Inside Out was pushed back, along with many of the classics. I wouldn't be too worried, obviously John Lassetter knows how to make a film.

"But what about Cars 2?"

Almost all great film directors have made at least one bad movie, even the most renowned directors like Steven Spielberg. Just because lots of people had issues with that film doesn't mean that he's somehow forgotten how to make a good movie. He is the Chief Creative Officer of Pixar and Disney Animation: I'm sure he's still got what it takes to make an amazing movie. And the fact that he's taking more time doesn't concern me: one of the Pixar's strategies to making great films is to not rush them.

As bad as this sounds, everytime I hear about this my immediate reaction is "does this really have to be willed into existence?"

Obviously John has a lot of pressure under him -- you don't break up a certainly finite nature of a trilogy just for a movie that didn't demand it. But after two year-long delays, my set of mind is currently that if it's really this hard and difficult, why bother?

I'm not saying to completely scrap it, but if they downgraded it to a Valentine's Day TV special (even an hour-long one), the sting and the stakes would be significantly removed. Currently there's a problem and it's probably perfectionism. It's just too much for this story, IMO. TS4 could be great, granted, I'm just not sure if it's really worth all of this distress.

A good comparison is Indy 4 (Crystal Skull)... which, on its own, is really just an okay/mediocre adventure film with a few fun setpieces. But due to the immense pressure it was under, it created an enormous reaction of pure letdown for people, leading to its probably unwarranted mass hatred. This was especially true due to the fact that Last Crusade was seen as a perfect sendoff for the character, now sullied by this fourth film.

I hope to be proven wrong but if they let it go in any number of forms, I would not be letdown either.

I think[arrow-10x10] John Lasseter is a very talented and creative director and I think he will truly do justice with Toy Story 4. I just think maybe it needs a little more time and The Incredibles 2 doesn't need as much. Also goldenstate5, I don't think we can compare this film to Indy 4 at all. I think that Toy Story 4 is going to be fantastic, because the people at Pixar have such[arrow-10x10] a wonderful method for creating sequels, in where it has to be as good or better than the original.
