Pixar Post - T.J.
Hello all,

Just wanted to start a thread to chat about the news that Disney is planning to break today (June 30) at 9AM PST / Noon EST. We'll update as the news comes to light. They're holding a Facebook Live session here https://www.facebook.com/Disney/ (looks like they're running a few minutes behind).

Rich Moore and Phil Johnston are live and have just announced Wreck It Ralph 2 as John C. Riley (the voice of Ralph) jumped into frame! Ha! Looks like it's slated to release on March 9, 2018.

What are everyone's thoughts on the announcement? I would actually say that Wreck It Ralph is probably my favorite Disney film released in the recent era and I'm very excited to see more. The high-level premise is that Ralph leaves the arcade and wrecks in the Internet. It will be interesting to see how they pull it off - but I like the fake Google (Gügle), Amazon (Amazing), etc.

Either way - count us excited as we think about the update!

Here's the announcement video

Here's a better look at the first piece of art and the official press release details. Interestingly, they also slipped in a date change for Gigantic, which previously held the March 9, 2018 date and is now November 21, 2018.

Wreck-It-Ralph-2-Image.jpg

Wreck-It Ralph is heading back to the big screen, and this time, he’s wrecking the internet. The Oscar®-nominated Walt Disney Animation Studios team from the original film is reteaming for the follow-up, including director Rich Moore (“Zootopia,” “The Simpsons”) and producer Clark Spencer (“Zootopia,” “Bolt”). Phil Johnston (writer, “Wreck-It Ralph,” “Zootopia,” “Cedar Rapids”) joins Moore as director and a writer on the project. John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman return as the bad-guy-turned-good, Ralph, and the girl with the game-winning glitch, Vanellope von Schweetz. The untitled sequel will hit theaters—literally—on March 9, 2018.

“From the moment we started working on the first ‘Wreck-It Ralph,’ we knew there were so many possibilities with these characters,” said Moore, who has been developing it since shortly after the release of the first film, and while directing this year’s critically-acclaimed hit “Zootopia” with Byron Howard. “This time, Ralph’s wrecking wreaks havoc on the Web—as only he can do. Characters we loved in the first film are back and we are ecstatic to be working with them—and the actors who voice them—once again.”

“The world of the internet is the perfect place to send Ralph and Vanellope,” said Johnston. “The scope and scale are so vast and the possibilities for comedy are endless.”

“Ralph is a character very near and dear to my heart,” added Reilly. “I'm really looking forward to playing the big lug again. Making the first ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ was one of the most special experiences I've ever had and I'm really looking forward to bringing him back to life. So many kids I've met all over the world are excited to see him again, too. They tell me all the time!”

When “Wreck-It Ralph” opened on Nov. 2, 2012, it turned in the highest opening weekend ever for a Walt Disney Animation Studios film at the time of release. Nominated for an Oscar® and Golden Globe® for best animated feature, “Wreck-It Ralph” won the PGA Award for outstanding producer of an animated theatrical motion picture as well as five Annie Awards, including best animated feature, director, cast and screenplay. The film was named best animated feature by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, earned outstanding achievement in casting for an animated feature by the Casting Society of America, and won the Kids’ Choice Award for favorite animated movie.

DISNEY CROSSY ROAD WRECKED At 12 p.m. PT today, Disney’s hit mobile game, Disney Crossy Road, will be wrecked by Ralph in celebration of the announcement. As fans play through the 12 different Disney and Pixar worlds of Disney Crossy Road, Ralph may appear and ‘wreck’ part of their gameplay.

“Wreck-It Ralph has been one of the most popular worlds to play in Disney Crossy Road, so it made perfect sense to celebrate Ralph’s return by letting him go outside his world and ‘wreck’ other parts of the game,” said Chris Heatherly, SVP & GM, Disney Apps and Games. “We are big fans of the first film, as are our players, and can’t wait to see how the next chapter unfolds.”

“GIGANTIC” DATE-CHANGE The animated feature “Gigantic,” originally announced as Disney’s March 9, 2018, release, will be released on November 21, 2018.

Well, two WDAS releases like this year once again, and also the first true sequel from them since The Rescurers Down Under, as the direct to video sequels were from DisneyToon Studios

Im so surprised, as we been hearing tidbits of it, and now seeing it been confirmed by the makers just gave so much joy, after seeing it four years ago, thinking to myself, 'wow, i want to be the best player ever', it is also the film that got me playing on my old game things again, so this film is very special to me and i cant wait for the sequel

Along with both Warner Animation Group and independent animated movies, I think the only movie that I have a interest in seeing that year from Disney is Toy Story 4. But even then, I'm very mixed about it. Why couldn't it be a whole new story on a completely new set of characters?

Cause arcade games...internet...same thing. Not really.

Could've just gone for an original world and original characters specifically made to fit that world if they're going to be switching settings like that.

I like this news. The Internet is a good way to expand the world of Wreck-it-Ralph, but still make it feel familiar as it is still a digital universe with video games/video game characters. It is always important for a sequel to do that, expand the world but still have it be true to the original film. They also have the opportunity to have some great comedy. Hopefully they go beyond just having parodies of website names.
A Wreck-it-Ralph sequel has been rumored for a while, as is the idea that Mario might be a character. Any thoughts on him showing up?

Don't sequels typically switch settings to keep it fresh?

If they want to keep it fresh the possibilities for new games that could be plugged into the arcade are literally infinite.

Also, I'd consider this a unique case because the internet idea sounds like it genuinely could be an idea all its own. And actually a kind of interesting one. But now it's going to be tied down to a pre-existing universe.

I will admit, I probably should wait for mention of what the plot is (to me it sounds like either they go everywhere, in which case it's pointless for it to be them, or they stick to computer games, in which case they could've stay in the arcade and it's wasting potential), but I've lost the benefit of the doubt after Pixar's unneeded shoehorning movies into their universes.

Hmmm - If anything I'd guess he'd only show up as a cameo...kind of like some of the other cameos (Q-Bert, Pac-Man or some of the Streetfighter characters). As much as I do love the Mario franchise, I (at this point), would rather not have him in there. It was fun to see Q-Bert and such because they were throwback characters, but seeing a character that is still relevant today from another company would kind of take my mind out of the movie. Again, all of my initial thoughts could change when (or if) we heard how they could possibly integrate him as a character.

Since there was also rumors of Ralph running across other (upgraded) versions of himself (in updated forms like mobile or online gaming), that could be a way to stumble upon Mario too. I wonder if this story rumor will come to be.

I finally watched Wreck it Ralph this weekend and I enjoyed it. It's not my favorite new era Disney film (that goes either to Big Hero 6 or Zootopia), I critique the use of real world songs which age it, and, lastly, King Candy did not impress me, which was surprising given how big his fanbase is, but overall it's a creative and fun movie. I'm not sure how they can improve on it, honestly, and my feelings about this news are mixed, but I figured there would be a sequel coming at some point.

So what does this leave the confirmed upcoming Disney animation movies as? Moana, Frozen 2, Wreck it Ralph 2, and Gigantic?

Disney Animation has Moana this November, no films for 2017, WIR2 in March 2018, Gigantic November 2018, no films for 2019, and an untitled film for November 2020. Frozen 2 currently does not have a release date; I've speculated November 2020, but according to IMDb, which is of limited reliability, that slot is for a film by directing duo Aaron Blaise and Robert Walker (directors of Disney's Brother Bear), the latter of which passed away last year.

EDIT: a schedule of upcoming Disney releases for the next five Marches, Junes, and Novembers

NOV 2016: Moana
MAR 2017: Beauty and the Beast [Live-action adaptation]
JUN 2017: Cars 3
NOV 2017: Coco
MAR 2018: Wreck-It Ralph 2
JUN 2018: Toy Story 4
NOV 2018: Gigantic
MAR 2019: Untitled Live-Action Adaptation
JUN 2019: The Incredibles 2
NOV 2019: Untitled Live-Action Adaptation
MAR 2020: Untitled Pixar Film
JUN 2020: Untitled Pixar Film
NOV 2020: Untitled Disney Film

So it'll be Vanellope vs Violet in the battle for box-office queen of 2018, granted both series are underrated in their regards.

Granted seeing as this film will be set in the world-wide internet and anything goes on the web, stays on the web, I wonder if Vanellope will encounter other versions of herself in different forms or takes on the character (like say fan-recolors of herself that proclaims her to be their sibling, ect. ect.) although I think that would be a bit too much for a Disney film as they would need to credit the creators of those characters in order to use them.
