Do you think Dory will have the legs (or fins) to reach a billion dollars at the worldwide box office. It will be the fifth animated film to do so.

It almost definitely will. It has grossed over $834 million already, still has releases in multiple countries throughout the rest of August & September. It is the highest grossing animated film ever in the US currently, the biggest Pixar movie ever in China, the first Pixar movie to dominate box office for 3 weeks, and had the highest grossing Thursday night preview for animation, highest grossing opening day for animation, and highest grossing opening weekend for animation, giving it an excellent chance of passing a billion dollars.

It will likely overtake Zootopia, possibly Minions. There's a chance it will overtake Toy Story 3, but I can't see it overtaking Frozen.

I'm very intrigued to see how it will pan out - it's hard as it gets down to the end to cross that threshold of 1 Billion. Domestically, it pulled in 2 Million over the Aug 5-7 weekend which isn't going to get it there in the States.

But according to IMDb, it still is set to release in the following countries and still needs 127.8 Million to hit 1 Billion.

Denmark 25 August 2016
Finland 26 August 2016
Norway 26 August 2016
Sweden 26 August 2016
Greece 1 September 2016
Turkey 2 September 2016
Italy 15 September 2016
Austria 29 September 2016
Germany 29 September 2016

For contrast - here is what Inside Out made in those countries.

Denmark - 6 Million
Finland - 3 Million
Norway - 3.3 Million
Sweden - 5.4 Million
Greece - 2.2 Million
Turkey - 1.5 Million
Italy - 27.1 Million
Austria - 3.2 Million
Germany - 31.6 Million

That totals $83.3 Million. If we use the same numbers as a guide for Inside Out, that leaves 44.5 Million on the table. Some of that may increase in the 9 countries still to release due to the fact that it's a sequel...but there's still some big ground to make up!

Final prediction...it will make it eventually...but it will squeak over.

It only came out in the UK last week, it's opening ($10.7 million) was the second highest for a Pixar film in the UK behind Monsters University.

The film passed $900 Million on August 15! We wrote a post regarding the news as well as included a summary of upcoming release countries as well. Will it reach $1 Billion? We're feeling more confident/hopeful by the week!

In the UK, Dory is back at number 1. It was number 2 for the last 2 weeks behind Suicide Squad, which seems to have dipped. In fact Dory has risen 12% from last week, while Suicide Squad has gone down by 40%. It has little competition in the UK, except for possibly The BFG. Which is a huge hit in the UK. Another bonus is that there isn't another movie that could compete with it until Kubo and the Two Strings which comes out on September 9.

Just a quick update - the film is at $961 Million now. Dory opened in Italy this weekend and netted 6.2 Million in it's initial release...which, for comparison purposes is on-par with Inside Out's initial weekend release which pulled 6.4 Million. Dory is still set to release in Germany on 9/29...so it's getting close, but I still believe it will squeak over with 39 Million to go!

It's also coming Austria on 9/29. There is still a chance of a billion dollars.
Also, it is still playing in 292 US theatres this week.

It is now at 969.8 million. In an article, Box Office Mojo says a billion dollars seems inevitable. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=4225&p=.htm

According to Box Office Mojo, Finding Dory is about to pass a billion dollars and is now the 5th highest grossing animated film ever, recently passing Despicable Me 2. It will be Disney's third billion dollar film this year.
