I'm just kind of curious whether the pterodactyls being insane and looking to kill things was really obvious pretty much as soon as they showed up, way before they actually ate the "critter", to everyone else.

Cause...yeah, was to me.

Not complaining (not like it really matters in the grand scheme of the movie), I just found myself about to make a comment about it being obvious in another thread and realized I didn't really know if it was just me.

I'd consider the possibility we were supposed to be one step ahead of Arlo in this instance, but when they finally eat it it's pretty clearly framed like it's meant to be shocking, at least from what I remember.

The trailers showed the pterodactyls attacking Arlo, plus their official bio on disney.com made it clear they were bad guys... So in my case as soon as they showed up on screen (and as soon as the fox showed up) I expected that they eat the fox and then attack Arlo and Spot.

Now the trailers didn't say they would be insane. I'd say that aspect wasn't so obvious to me at the beggining, although Thunderclap's monologue reminded me a lot of Syndrome, so it did suggest he was kinda deranged.

I agree that the fox's death was meant to be surprising, but at the same time it could be taken as dark comedy, so I'm not sure what was the intended effect.
In any case, I think the brutality of it helped set up the pterodactyls as bad guys regardless of whether it was a surprise of not.

I think we were supposed to know that the Pterodactyls were like that. There are a lot of people working at Pixar and Disney who would be reviewing the movie over, and they would fix it if we weren't supposed to know.
I think we were supposed to be creeped out, and then when eating the fox(I thought it was a raccoon?) was kind of the final blow that pushed it over the edge into full on bad guys.

From the trailers and D23 I knew that the pterodactyls were going to be antagonists but I always wanted to know why they were chasing Arlo to begin with before I saw the film. When I saw the film I knew clearly that they were bad guys when they said they were looking for small survivors that were trapped from the storm.

mac95 I also thought it was a raccoon but it was a critter so an evolved fox like raccoon creature. Poor little thing though R.I.P little critter.

Of what I remember it had pointy ears and a long snout (very much like Forrest Woodbush's Fury), which is why I thought it was fox. But then I can't tell for sure, I only saw the film once and I barely looked at the poor critter because I was feeling so bad for him...

Gray Catbird, it was actually Destructor who had the snout and pointy ears. Fury was the small amphibious guy. [Big-Grin_zps23ec4c40]

Argh! I knew I should've checked! Thanks for bringing me back to reason, mac95.

I totally forgot about the commercials. [Laughing_zpsee77b0c4] I started trying to mentally flip through them before the climax to try and figure out what part we hadn't seen yet, but when they actually showed up I forgot they attacked him in them. Yeah, that'd give it away.

So, since it only lasted maybe thirty seconds, do these guys count as another Waternoose-esque nice-guy-is-really-villain twist?
