This is just something I mentioned to Dan and he really wanted me to post so here goes!

When I little and initially saw Toy Story, the joke about Andy opening up bed sheets as a present at his birthday party and Ham remarking "who invited that kid?" completely went over my head. When I was a little older I "got it" and it's hilarious because bed sheets obviously make a lame kid's party present.

However, what if those bed sheets were a little cooler than the green army men reported them to be? What if those bed sheets were actually the Buzz Light sheets we see put on Andy's bed in the Strange Things are Happening montage that occurs soon after? Given the Buzz craze, maybe that other kid's mom saw those sheets as a fun, yet still practical gift. Maybe Andy's mom gave the other mom that idea since she figured Andy would want to redecorate his room with a Buzz theme to go along with his new toy. The bed sheets also could have been from Andy's mom as a little foreshadowing for his final present. Or maybe the bed sheets Andy opened were just your basic white cotton sheets and I'm reading too deep into a funny line. Those are my two cents, thoughts anyone?

p.s. When my husband Dan the Pixar Fan was little, he was also confused by this joke... Mostly because he thought the army men said "Benjy" so Ham saying "who invited that kid?" made him wonder why they reported a kid as being a new present...

Ha! Thanks for sharing my confusion as a little kid...but even though I thought Potato Head said "Benjy", I don't think I thought a kid was being opened as a present lol. I don't know what I thought Benjy was, I just remember thinking that's what he said : )

Anyway, yah I thought this was a cool thought, I had never thought of the fact that the "bedsheets" could be the Buzz Lightyear ones we see later on! Ultimately, I think that it was just a funny line, BUT who knows? It actually could have been a foreshadowing for sure! It definitely intrigued me to think about, either way. If Andy was getting some Buzz presents throughout the party, I would say the bed sheets would have been from his mom and that the Buzz figure at the end was the crowing moment of the party after perhaps other Buzz presents (like the bedsheets) that we don't see or hear about. Like maybe the long present the toys freaked out over seeing could have been the Buzz Lightyear poster? Or the lunch box could have been Buzz Lightyear themed as well? [smile]

The joke about the bed sheets went over my head as a toddler and even when I was a bit older the idea of a Buzz Lightyear bed sheets did not occur to me until years later.
It was an "Ohhhh!" moment. XD

But yeah, it is a possibility of Andy having a Buzz Lightyear themed party.
I think I remember reading somewhere that the original beginning of the film was Andy watching a TV show about Buzz Lightyear and becoming excited about it. So it could be possible Buzz Lightyear was a huge trend like Pokemon.

OK, so first off and most importantly - the story about Dan and "Benji" was awesome - I was laughing like crazy over that one. I guess I was old enough to get the joke at the time I saw Toy Story in the theaters...let's not talk about being in my mid-30's OK!

If I think back to being a kid - would I have wanted sheets as a gift at a birthday party? No way! Also, if I think about it from a toys perspective, bed sheets would be pretty boring, so I bet that was Potato Head's excuse to utter his sarcastic remark. That being said, I think there is a high likelihood that those sheets could have in fact been Buzz sheets - that's an interesting thought for sure. The lame thought lead to the main toy's overthrow! Strange things are happenin' to me, ain't no doubt about it.
