Not sure how true this rumor is, but I would be a bit disappointed by this news.  We're less than a year away from the film!  I was really hoping to see what Bob Peterson could do as a director.  I'll be honest, the past three Pixar films have been subpar.  It's hard to follow up what I think are the three best Pixar films (Wall-e, Up, and Toy Story 3), but Cars 2 wasn't bad, but wasn't really good either.  Brave was overrated.  Don't get me wrong, it was good.  I think Wreck-it Ralph was better.  Monster's U was good.  No where near as good as Monster's Inc.

I agree, I'm very excited to see what Peterson and the rest of the team (Sohn, Enrico Casarosa) delivered. If it's true that both Peterson and producer John Walker have been removed, I have a hard time seeing how the film could meet the release date.

if Peterson is off, it seems kind of hard to believe that they can get it done for a late may release date. Of course this kind of stuff has happened in the past, Toy Story 2 had a fast deadline, Ratatouille and Brave switched directors mid-production. But seeing as most of us haven't seen footage or even a trailer, i sense that they could be behind the eight ball on this one. As always with negative pixar rumors, skepticism, and doubt, i anxiously wait to be proven wrong.

whatever the case may be, Lassater will make the call for whatever is best for the movie.

I just recently found out about this. If the rumor is true I will be very disappointed, Bob Peterson is a great story guy and I wonder why they would cut him as the director. Also, all of the previously cut directors, are never seemed to be talked about after being cut, which would be disappointing if it happened to Bob.

I'd have to say I agree with all of you, I was really looking forward to a Bob Peterson directed film and the directors that have been replaced in the past have usually left the company shortly thereafter (i.e. Brad Lewis, Brenda Chapman) and I would hate to see that happen with Bob Peterson as well.

Pixar Post - T.J.
Hey everyone, as I noted on this other post regarding the rumor surrounding the Producer role change (with John Walker being replaced by Denise Ream), we really struggled with reporting this due to a lack of sources...but hindsight from the D23 Expo may be shaping up to hold some weight - only time will tell. We felt with all the rumors and news swirling around, that we had to throw our opinion in the mix. In addition to the great conversation going here in the forum, if you'd like to read our post, you can read it here.

I'm interested in the release date as well and wondering if it will get pushed? Pixar has done some amazing things in the past with meeting release dates, but it will all depend on how drastic the changes are. The one thing that could help with any changes they implement would be having Peter Sohn on the project, since he's been involved since the beginning.

I'm also concerned about Bob potentially leaving Pixar if this is true. As MarcVibbert mentioned as well, any director that has been re-labeled as co-Director from a project has left Pixar shortly thereafter. If Bob was not at Pixar, it would be a blow to the studio in my opinion since he is such a useful utility player. William Jardine of A113Animation also noted on his Twitter feed that Bob's Twitter profile no long mentions working at Pixar (I remember the note regarding Pixar in his profile as well).

In a small twist, Bob Peterson's Twitter bio is now updated again with a dinosaur reference - it now says, "Dwelling in the Cretaceous". Thanks to Nick on Twitter for the heads up.

UPDATED (08/30) - Bob's twitter profile has been changed again - it is not blank.

Well, we now know that the rumors are official (our full write up is here). I can certainly say that this seems to have the most passionate responses from fans regarding a Pixar Director change that we've seen. So my question is...
  • Are fans getting more passionate because this has happened on four-of-the-last-eight Pixar films? or,
  • Is this because Bob Peterson was so loved by the Pixar community?

Well, for me, it's a couple of things. It's partially the first - what is happening that 4 of the last 8 films (and 3 of the last 4) have required this action? Has there been some fundamental change in the studio or leadership? Is it because Lasseter is now splitting his time between both Disney and Pixar? Or because they have so many films in development at the same time, the key leaders of the studio aren't able to give enough time and attention to each film? Or, maybe it's just coincidence this has been happening. Pixar is taking on different stories, taking bigger risks. That makes it harder to get things right.

The second thing is Peterson's status within the studio. He is one of the longest-tenured employees, having been at Pixar since Toy Story. He has been responsible for large parts of different film's developments, such as head of story, writer and co-director on a number of films. The fact that someone with such history and expertise is being taken off the project is a bit shocking to me. Maybe not to the level as if it was Pete Docter or Andrew Stanton, but right below them.

Here's a possibility: Bob has amazing skills in many areas. But to be director of an animated film requires all those skills and something additional; the director is responsible for overseeing every bit of the film development! Pete Docter has talked about how incredibly hard and stressful it is. It could be that Bob has 75 or 80% of what it takes to be a director, but not that small but critical remaining piece.

In light of that, what I'm most worried about is whether Peterson will leave the studio. There hasn't been a case where the director hasn't left after being removed from the film. But in this case, Bob has such important and valuable gifts and expertise, it would be a major loss to Pixar. There must be a huge hit to the ego to have this happen, but hopefully Pixar management makes it clear to Bob that he can still contribute greatly to the studio, and that he stays. To me, this is the strength of the studio, what makes Pixar what they are.
