Pixar Post - T.J.
Incredibles Scene.jpg
Brad Bird recently shared that The Incredibles 2 is well underway and will feature the same characters and feel - just set in a new direction. So great to hear any new information - regardless of how small!

“Hopefully it’s the same characters and feel, but going in a new direction,” Bird added. “I mean, that’s the trick with a sequel. It’s repeating yourself, without repeating yourself.”

Seems like my dream has come true that the Parrs won't be changed too much in terms of looks and feel (and all but effectively deconfirms Syndrome returning as the main baddie (thank god), along with the popular Dash/Jack-Jack villain rumors, I mean who here ever thought that the younger Parr siblings would turn bad?)

But set in a new direction? What is he up to? (Obviously we know the Family Dynamic is the key theme like in the 1st film, he also mentions a different cinematic landscape compared to the 1st film, which could be a reference to new superheroes popping up and new locations to explore, which pretty much confirms that he wants to fully show off the Incredibles universe a lot more compared to the 1st film).

The one good thing is that we're basically getting the same look and feel of the characters as seen in the 1st film (so crisis adverted pretty much, as I was hoping Disney/Pixar wouldn't change the look of the family going forward when the sequel was 1st announced), although it is possible we may still get a time-skip (abit probably a smaller time skip, like in the non-Toy Story sequels, although a large one isn't out of the question).

Great! Looking forward to the sequel, and I'm glad that it'll have a similar feel as the first film. [smile]

The only part that confuses me is that are they picking up right where the 1st film ended or a little bit after the Underminer fight occurs? (Seeing as Bird's keeping the family feel and franchise intact).

Hmm, I don't know. I'm thinking he might just mean that the atmosphere of the overall sequel will be pretty consistent to how the first film feels. [wink]

He did talked about keeping the main characters designs intact going forward (hence the same characters part, even though he never did mentioned their designs when talking about them), and if it's going to have the same timeless feel as the original, it's a sign he's going to stick with the same designs and timeline for the 2nd film, I highly doubt he ages the family up at this point in time now that we have a definite plan in place (although if he does, it's probably going to be a 1 or 2 year gap, mostly to update Jack-Jack's role).

Plus Disney/Pixar rarely ever changes a character's overall design from their original film to sequel anyways (granted half of the sequels only had cars, toys, monsters and fish in them, this will be the 1st full sequel to have human leads).

Also the news articles are clearly positive that the family will likely stay in their current looks for now seeing as we just got the Superhero buzz as shown at the end of the 1st film, it'd feel very weird to start it off without explaining what happens after that.

EDIT: Talked to a guy on one of the articles (via Disqus) named Gerald Lopez who managed to talk to one of the Pixar animators regarding the Incredibles II about reusing the same character models from the original film to re-animate them for the 2nd film, and the animator replied back to him saying yes, they will.

Take it with a grain of salt for now, but it's something at least.
