Pixar Post - T.J.
Cars-3-Concept-Art-Film-Details.jpg
Hello all, since we've been eagerly awaiting news from Cars 3, we wanted to summarize the news that was revealed in today's USA Today article. We summarized the article on our homepage with some of our thoughts, but also wanted to highlight the details to discuss them a bit more.

Story highlight: As technology continues to permeate the racing world and as Lightning McQueen is badly beaten in a race by the new hot-shot rookie, Jackson Storm, the aging racer seeks the advice of the a new trainer, Cruz Ramirez (a sleek Hispanic female racer) to help him learn some new tricks. Lightning needs to keep himself relevant as he continues to train for the Florida 500.

Our thoughts on the story: As we talk about in our article, as soon as I heard the news I thought how perfect it was to tackle the topic of aging - especially in the angle of sports (since all sports deal with this issue). Sounds like this film could be packed with excitement and emotion as we feel for Lightning's career position. We're excited to see some of the old characters (confirmed are Mater, Sally and Ramone) interspersed with the new characters (Jackson Storm and Cruz Ramirez).

Director Announcement: It's so great to hear that Brian Fee will be helming this project - with his past work on Cars and Cars 2, he certainly knows the films and has definitely risen through the Pixar ranks as an up-and-coming Director.

Production Schedule: What are everyone's thoughts on the production of the film? It certainly sounds like it's going to be a tight one to make the release date. It also sounds non-typical if they're still working on story points as well as finding vocal talent.

In any regard, we're so excited to finally start learning details from the film - what about you?

Brilliant brilliant news. It's great to see Lightning McQueen as our lead once more and for him explore an unopened box of character development not seen since the first film! Cars 2 was fun and all, but this film seems to be doing what should've been done and make the audience think, and remind them that "not everything will last forever." That is what people have come to expect from Pixar. I'm glad to see them not deviating too far from the first film like the second one did. I'm also glad to see a passionate Cars and Cars 2 guy taking on the sequel.

I know we had barely gotten any news about the sequel at a time when we should've, but I'm surprised to hear that they're so far behind in production (I found one source that said that the film had been in production since 2011). I just hope everything works out for this one. I know Cars 2 was also behind, so I'm hoping that history won't repeat itself.

Here's to hoping for a great film, and for a trailer prior to Fidnign Dory!

So in another thread, I wrote this:
Gray Catbird wrote:
Wow! After all this time I thought they'd never give us anything about Cars 3.

Looks like they picked the one storyline that I thought had a potential to be good -- McQueen is the new Doc Hudson! Hopefully that means McQueen will be back as the center of the story.
Boy, this is soooo remembering me that I am a Cars fan... Say all you want, but I was pumped up for Cars 2, and I'm afraid any dose of cynicism won't stop me from looking forward to this one too.

Following a comment from T.J., I just want to clarify what I meant by "McQueen is the new Doc Hudson".
It's true there's a big story difference in that Doc Hudson had a crash when he was a the top of his game and that was the end for him. Meanwhile we've seen McQueen has been highly successful.

Still, there is a similarity... In the first film, McQueen was the rookie and Doc Hudson was the old champion. It was a central theme of the original Cars, that old things, no matter how good, will be forgotten.
Now, it looks like this guy Jackson Storm is the rookie, and McQueen is the old timer that is becoming irrelevant in the eyes of the world. Hence how McQueen would be the new Doc Hudson. Which would be a nice way (and possibly the only way) of bringing McQueen's story full circle.

Regarding the production, it sure is disappointing to hear that the film might be going the same way as Cars 2. I mean, after doing it once, you would think they wouldn't do it again, right? On the other hand, Cars 2 is perhaps unique among Pixar films for being the one where the emotional arc was defined late in production (I don't how late, though). Maybe one reason to hope for this one is that they seem to already have a core theme in place...

Wow, fantastic news! The story concept makes me legitimately excited for the film, but as Gray Catbird said, the production schedule is indeed troubling, as well as the fact that they have a new director on board.

Re: the new director: to be fair, all Pixar directors except for Brad Bird and Brenda Chapman were first time feature film directors at one point with a Pixar feature, including John Lasseter (Toy Story), Pete Docter (Monsters Inc) and Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo), but the issues with Cars 2, MU, and TGD and their first time directors make me just a tad nervous (if Pete Docter or Andrew Stanton were directing, I'd be positively 100% bonafide hyped because of their impeccable track records). Thankfully though we haven't heard of a mid-production director switch like what we saw on Cars 2/Brave/MU/TGD, so hopefully Brian Fee will prove himself and turn out amazing like Docter, Stanton and Lee Unkrich back in the day (I'll try to keep my cynicism to a minimum). His credits and the story that they seem to have went with certainly help the case.

In regards to Cruz, I like how Pixar is continuing their recent more progressive trend, with a female Hispanic car. It sounds like perhaps she'll be a co-lead or a major supporting character, which will make things interesting. And of course it's always refreshing to see Pixar come up with new ideas whenever they make sequels.

Lastly, this is reassuring confirmation that Cars 3 is indeed happening and will be released in time. Hopefully we get a teaser trailer soon, though meanwhile the concept art is also pretty interesting.

Ah, I see - I thought you were originally talking about the fact that McQueen was going to be the coach to Cruz...kind of like how Doc was the coach to McQueen. Got it! [Cool_zpsf7e1371b]

The more I think about it though, the more saddened I get thinking about the overall topic of McQueen coming to the end of his reign as champion. I feel this way because if I think about musicians I love, it's hard watching them hit the stage when you can only remember them at their peak. I feel like it's going to be hard to watch at times because of the love I feel for him as a character and not wanting that zest to fade. But...I also LOVE that it's making me feel this way, because it's real life and I like the idea of tackling this topic.

Mark Z. on our main post commented,
Quote:
But i'm afraid we are gonna learn the same lesson as Hudson learned us in Cars 1: that old school can still beat the new school."No school like the old school!''(Ollie, The Incredibles)

I can totally see that as a valid concern. I replied with,
Quote:
I wonder if he'll truly have to adapt in order to win...or will he triumph because he isn't reliant on the new tech (like if a malfunction happens) like the other newer cars.

Just an interesting thought to let swirl around my mind for a bit...I'm not sure how they'll handle it...but I agree with Mark, it could be good or bad depending on how it goes.

Yay, news:

I'm so, so glad they finally name Brian Fee (wasn't he working on an original or was that before this?) the director, because i was getting worried, also reading the USA Today article, since animation isn't finished yet i wonder if they are showing some finished parts of the teaser coming out soon

Haha, I understand! We had two completely different (but equally valid) outlooks on Doc... [biggrin]

I hope too that the film will deal with the emotion one can expect from this story idea, and with Pixar at the helm there are reasons to have hope. On the other hand, considering how McQueen is the central character of a multi-billion dollar franchise, I can't help but wonder if there wouldn't be any conflicts of interest... I dunno, do kids need McQueen to be the best racer around to like him?

Yay, all right, finally some news! [biggrin]

I'm thinking that this concept definitely is interesting, and I can't wait to explore it further in the film. I'm looking forward to meeting the new characters too! I wonder if Jackson Storm will be a jerk like McQueen was when he started out, or if he'd be more respectful to other people. And what happened to Doc? They might explain these things in the movie. Also, the concept art definitely is intriguing.

On a separate note, I'm wondering if the film makers will be able to finish the movie by the deadline, since it seems they're experiencing a time crunch right now. And hopefully we'll get a teaser in front of Finding Dory!

I'm fine with the more serious down to earth tone that the writers are going for in the third installment that Cars 2 didn't have. It really sounds intriguing! Hopefully that whether Lighting wins or loses the Florida 500 race that he will have to accept the fact that he needs to retire. Hopefully, they won't shoehorn a major plot twist like all Lighting needed was a new car battery and he really didn't need to retire. Also, as long as Matter keeps his big mouth shut for the majority of the movie, I'll be perfectly happy. By the way, on a side note, I really like that one concept art where it shows the backside of Lighting McQueen and (supposedly) Ramirez riding though the rain with water being splash all over the place. I can't wait to see that affect on screen.

Well, it'd be ok, I suppose, to see McQueen retire, though personally I think I'd be a little too early for that. [wink]

Anyone been following Pixar long enough to know if the first bit of info on Cars 2 conveniently neglected to mention Mater? This sounds like Lightning is the protagonist again, and also like they're dropping the stupid spy thing. Which sounds remarkably like learning from your mistakes. Which I was not expecting.

Of course. Pixar might finally let a new guy actually finish a movie, and said movie is Cars 3. Of course.

(Not that there's isn't still time to replace him, if Good Dinosaur's director switch announcement is anything to go by. [sneaky])

I've been sharing my distaste regarding the existence of Cars 3 on here for a while now.

However, it seems that they are actually making an effort to execute a story driven film here and I find myself vaguely interested in this project as opposed to before where seeing the letters "Cars 3" just made me want to puke.

I love films that deal with stuff like this.

It's part of the reason why I love Pixar, they tackle themes that most animation (and even live-action) won't.

I'm interested for the teaser.

Definitely excited for the teaser as well...but I'm guessing it's going to be super-vague and probably 30 seconds or something like that. I could be way off, but that's just my thought. If you remember, Stanton hinted that a teaser was "highly possible" when asked if one would be shown ahead of Dory - so if that comes true at least we'll be able to get some more info in a few weeks.

So I'm super late talking about this! But I'm still going to share my thoughts on it! First off, I love the concept, of McQueen kind of being outdated now by super cool new technology, and the fact that he is about to retire! And the fact that he got badly beaten by Jackson Storm, kind of reminds me of the sitaution Doc Hudson went through in the original Cars film. The sort of old school vs. new school type of thing. Cruz, sounds like a fantastic new character, and I can't wait to see her in action in the film because I know she will be great! The whole plot of Cars 3 sounds great, and I am a huge Cars fan and I think this one will be the best one in the trilogy. I just really like the idea of McQueen no longer being this hot-shot rookie and kind of going down the path Doc went down in the original film. The story sounds absouletly fantastic, and I am so pumped for this! I am a huge Cars fan as I said, and it upsets me that a lot of people hate on the films, and they are all angered by the announcement of this sequel, saying that it is just a cash-grab for merchandise. But I honestly think that they will all be very surprised by this film, and actually love it (well most of them)! Because it sounds fantastic! It deals with messages like getting old and no longer being young and trending, it just sounds great! As far as characters I would like to return, I think I would like to see Finn McMissile, I just loved him in Cars 2. And I really want to see him return here, although for some reason I feel like that probably won't happen. I would also love to see Francessco Bernoullie return as well, although that also seems unlikley. As far as Mater goes, he is obviously going to be in the film, but in the article it didn't talk anything about him, so it looks like he is just back to a suppourting role, as a lot of audience members didn't like him as the lead in Cars 2. Although I loved his as the lead. And I also loved Cars 2! As far as production schedules goes it says that they are aiming for the release date set, but that they are still in the very early stages of making the film. That kind of worries me, but it is possible that they can get it done in time, but I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up pushing it back either. But I guess our question about what the release date is will be answered if we get a teaser of it in front of Finding Dory. Also I adore the concept art, can't wait to see that beautiful art being brought to life on the screen! Anyways I'm excited for Cars 3! As far as the 2017 Pixar releases go between Cars 3 and Coco, I'm obviously excited for both, but I would say I'm more excited for Cars 3! Anyways I'm super hyped and I feel like this film will surprise all the Cars haters! I'm super pumped! Can't wait to see it!

Wow, the concept pleasantly surprises me! It sounds like it will merge more seamlessly with the first Cars (which has an overall theme I like). If it turns out to be good, I'm guessing it'll be one of those situations in which audiences try to forget the existence of a canonical installment (Cars 2) and view this as the"true" sequel. I forget the trope name for that.
