Hi everyone! Saw this interesting bit on Twitter about the release of Inside Out in Japan: Instead of broccoli, Riley is disgusted by green peppers!

Which brings me to my question: what other tweaks and changes to Pixar movies have been made when they are released internationally?

Here's a freebie that do I know about to get the conversation started... My father was traveling for business to Hong Kong for work at the time of Toy Story 2's release, and he brought home a VCD copy of TS2, and I noticed this notable change: during Buzz's inspiring speech scene, the American flag was replaced with a spinning globe! Here's a couple screen grabs...

In the US, French Canadian and Russian version of Inside Outthe emotions of Riley's father are watching ice hockey during the dinner table scene. In the international version (Europe) the emotions are watching a soccer match.

In Toy Story 3 Buzz Lightyear becomes Spanish Buzz, In the Spanish version Buzz still speaks Spanish but with a different dialect. In Spain, "normal" Buzz uses standard Castilian Spanish, when he converts to Spanish mode, he then uses an exaggerated Andalusian accent from southern Spain.  In the Latin American version, "normal" Buzz uses the local Latin American variety of Spanish in the dubbed version, but when he converts to "Spanish mode", he shifts to the "standard" Castilian accent (from central Spain)

That's fantastic! We're so glad you posted about the localization process at Pixar! We had an interview with Laura Meyer from Pixar's localization team last year and provided some additional examples from Monsters University (images pasted below) - check out the full interview and read the article here. Also, welcome back to the forums - it's been a while, Josh!! [Cool_zpsf7e1371b]

As far as the images, yeah, we've wrote about the green peppers before, but we hadn't seen a screenshot, so that's a great addition! Thanks for spotting John Vignocchi's tweet with the image! Also, that's great about the TS2 globe in place of the flag. I think I need to order a foreign copy of each of the movies just to look for more of these changes...it's almost like spotting easter eggs!

Also, Dylan, although I had known of the Spanish Buzz changes, but I had never thought about the gag portion of it and how it would work for international audiences. Could the joke have been as funny just by switching dialects? I don't think it would have been as hilarious, but I'll let others who have seen it tell me. I just can't imagine if he went from talking "normal" to speaking with a thick American southern accent and had it be as funny. I'd be thinking, "why does he have a Southern accent mode"?

Anyway - I'm always happy to talk localization - such a cool topic. Fun fact - the movie that had the most changes due to localization was?...........Cars 2!

For Monsters University, they had to change the "LAME" cupcakes on Randy's face because other languages would not be able to fit the translated version of "lame" on the cupcakes. Because of this, they changed all the cupcakes to have little smiley faces on them.

I'm from the Carribean, and so I'm always reminded about the changes in these

Also, my version of MU didn't have the smiley face cupcakes, so that's surprising

Wow, they changed it to peppers?? Did they also change the pizza and the subconscious then?

Another tweak I noticed in Inside Out, though it's not as interesting: in the original film, when Riley receives a phone call from her mom, the phone displays the caller's name, "Mom", with no image; in international versions (or the French Canadian one at least...), the phone shows a picture of mom with no name.

Cool, Gray Catbird (Antoine) - that's a great one about the cell phone ID! Nope, I believe the pizza stayed the same. They just changed it to peppers because when Pixar was doing their research for localization, they found that Asian families feel their children broccoli more often than Americans (or other cultures) and they don't dislike it at all (generally speaking of course). So, they asked what they would go with and their studies said that they don't eat a lot of bell peppers there, so they could go with that. Pete did admit that it was a little odd, but they had to change it since broccoli wouldn't work there!

Here's another larger image of the broccoli/green pepper swap (thanks to the source, Pixar artist, David Lally)!

I just found one again! The Character Harv from Cars is voiced by Jeremy Piven in most of the English versions of the movie. In the UK version Harv is voiced by Jeremy Clarkson, the former Top Gear host.

For everyone who is not sure, Harv is Lightning McQueens agent. McQueen speaks to Harv via his speakerphone in the truck.

While we're on the topic of foreign voice-over, Jamie Oliver, a chef, voices the health insceptor in the UK version of Ratatouille
