Last year, Chinese studios released "The Autobot" which many said was a copy of Pixar's Cars movies. Yesterday, a court found the production studios of "The Autobits" guilty of copyright infringement of Disney/Pixar Cars and Cars 2. Some of the court's points included title name having some similarity, and especially two of the characters looking very similar to Lightning McQueen and Francesco Bernoulli.

Production studio Blue MTV (the maker of "The Autobots", were forced to pay Disney and Pixar 1.35 million yuan (US$194,115).

This article goes into even more detail of how the case started and the arguements on each side. Disney/Pixar argued about character design and the Chinese title. The Chinese studios claimed that it was made independently, the characters that appear to resemble Lightning and Francesco are based on real car, and the director claims to have never seen the Cars films http://www.china.org.cn/arts/2016-12/30/content_40012346.htm

Hmm, seems like a relatively small fine for this kind of violation, but then again, the Chinese legal system has much bigger problems. However, hopefully this pushes people to make more original animation (like what happened in China following the enormously successful run for DreamWorks' Kung Fu Panda) instead of knock offs.

Agreed. Autobots designed completely ripped off Pixar's. I'm surprised Hasbro is also not suing considering Autobots are also a term used multiple times in the Transformers franchise.

Pixar Post - T.J.
Ripoffs are no surprise but I agree, this is a total copy of Cars. There seem to be way too many similarities in the characters (including design and color-scheme). Even the third car seems to mirror the design of Rip Clutchgoneski (but not his colors).

The fine is quite small - it made me wonder what the total pull for Autobots was? I can't imagine it made a lot during its release.

Also, I wonder if Blue MTV is still able to release their sequel since it was slated for Summer 2017? I didn't read about that element in the articles.

I'm glad to hear some of these knockoffs are getting penalized finally - it's kind of out of hand across all the studios.

If you look closely and Autobots' poster, the character resembling McQueen has a very similar facial expression to McQuuen on the Cars 2 theatrical poster, and the character resembling Francesco has the exact same artwork (except for a few minor color differences) as one of Francesco's official character artworks for Cars 2. And McQueen and his corresponding Autobots character both have blue eyes, and Francesco and his corresponding Autobots character both have brown eyes.

Even the third character on the poster on the left is partly based off a fan-art of the batmobile (the roof design, tail fins, fenders) : http://tomztoyz.blogspot.ca/2010/12/batman-wallpaper-pixar-cars-movie-1989.html

EDIT: ...and it has Sally's wheels ( http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/pixar/images/4/4b/Sally_carrera.png/revision/latest?cb=20140314011950 ) and Finn's eyes/side vent from a Cars 2 artwork ( http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/pixar/images/4/4e/Cars-2-finn-mcmissile-posing.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20110422152944 ).
