I just finished the commentary and the Target exclusive features. First, let me comment on the amazing new original score piece composed for the menu screen, which segues amazingly into the feature. It's very mellow and etheral.

The commentary is fantastic, constructed as a psuedo-lecture seminar, and clearly broken up into pieces as to not make it feel like Pete and Ronnie are struggling to comment, however they still make jokes and attempt to have a light, brisk mood. They break down scenes, call up Bill Hader (and attempt to call Michael Giacchinno), and bring in the DP to anaylze the visual language of the film. It's absolutely wonderful, a top 5, if not the best Pixar audio commentary I've ever heard.

The two deleted scenes were just okay compared to the others shown via the blu-ray and DMA exclusives. "Riley" examines the opening of the film from a version unknown, which seems undefined. Here, Riley is clearly very young and seemingly not in school yet, which brought me back to shortly after the film was announced and John Lasseter described the film as being, "about a little girl and all the emotions who live inside her mind"... this seems very centric around this idea, as the first few minutes are them introducing the multitude of emotions in Headquarters, some are humorous just out of the notion that they weren't there in the final film (like "Schadenfreude")... but you can totally tell it was super top heavy and didn't explain at ALL who Riley was as a person. She was just a little girl who runs around the city playing around by herself. Hmm.

"Farmer Man" is the only deleted scene in the entirety of all presentations that is actually from a version of the film much closer to the one we have today. Joy, Bing Bong and Sadness are all in their final designs that were showcased in 2013, so this definitely is the most recent scene cut. However it is such, such a pointless action scene that had no reason for existence. It didn't explain anything about ideas themselves... it just seemed like a sequence to break monotony. I'm surprised Pete even chose it, although he just seemed to be tickled by the farmer character.

As for the digital content, don't rush to blame Target. This is very clearly a Disney-mandated decision. They want as many people as possible to register for DMA, which is why they saved three juicy deleted scenes that can only be seen on digital formats. (heck, the FIRST preview on the disc is a promo for DMA) The Aladdin re-release also included all the features for its re-release, and Tomorrowland did as well. I would not be surprised if Disney starts putting films into the "vault" only to feature it on DMA for perpetuity.

Also aww don't hate on "Mind Candy"! The last five minutes are pretty great!

Good thoughts for sure. I think you're definitely right about Disney pushing DMA, but I think they could (and should) have at least noted that they were digital exclusives (especially since they are pushing DMA).

Also - excellent review of the Blu-ray and the special features!

Well, as TJ succinctly put it, what irks me is that while Target promoted the heck out of their exclusive extras, they didn't tell people it wasn't included on the discs, but was digital-only, requiring you to sign up for a service. In all other cases that I know of when promising extras on a bluray set, the extras were either included on the discs, or it was at least clearly stated that the extras were digital-only, and required signing up to see them. (Remember, when extras are digital-only, you don't get to "keep" them for posterity as you do the movie; they're only on Disney's servers -- for the time being. I doubt they'll still be accessible 15 years from now, but I can take out a DVD from 15 years ago and watch the special features that were on the disc).

If Target had followed the lead of every other retailer (and themselves up to now), it would've been fine, because then at least people know what's actually being offered, instead of misleading people like this.

As for your thoughts on the commentary... exactly. As I said, great commentary track, worth purchasing just to hear.

I only have DVD, not Blu Ray, it seems really unfair that I don't get any deleted scenes or The Short.[Angry_zps01df8e28]

Yeah, it's a big bummer for sure, Scott. I have no idea why it couldn't fit - I certainly think that there should have been enough room to fit the short on the DVD disc. They're pushing people to the Blu-ray and digital versions for sure since they come with most of the extras. (Finally - welcome to the forums - glad you joined!)

As miafka said, I am very intrigued to see how the digital extras will pan out over time - it is definitely something I've thought about and why (at this point at least), I'm definitely still sticking with physical releases. Not to mention that it's still the highest quality to play it through the physical disc.

I got the Target exclusive editon bluray combo pack yesterday. Sad to see no Target exclusive DVD included. But I am loving the movie.
