Okay this is kind of an interesting theory. According to The Toy Story Films: An Animated Journey, John Lasseter's back-up film in case Toy Story wasn't approved would be an adaption of William Joyce's Dinosaur Bob:

Just in, case John had a second pitch in his back pocket: William Joyce's Dinosaur Bob.

Now the film was scrapped in favor of Toy Story obviously, but did it almost come back?

Take a look of that Up B-roll footage with the leaked concept art:
As you can see, there are multiple humans there, they look civilized and wear clothes unlike the cavemanish looking character of Spot, and the dinosaur looks like the one in the book:
Now this adaption could have been in development for two years in 2009, but then Pixar may could have found out about Bedrock Studios' Dinosaur Bob adaptation (now canceled, I believe), causing them to rework the project into the Good Dinosaur.

What do you think? Do you think the Good Dinosaur was once Dinosaur Bob? Would you go see a Dinosaur Bob adaptation?

I don't know, I could see them going for something like this when they just started out (as they were), but by the time 2009 came along I think they'd firmly cemented they weren't really the kind of studio that did adaptions. I could buy that The Good Dinosaur might have come from a desire to do something with dinosaurs after not doing that movie, but I don't think it was originally that movie and worked into what it is now.

Maybe 'The Good Dinosaur' will have an easter egg of Dinosaur Bob. [Winking_zps1d9118ce]

Well, I know Pixar aren't really the people who make adaptions of existing work (though I really do wish to see them make a faithful adaption of an existing book or something) but it could be Dinosaur Bob.

Pixar and author William Joyce are good friends, I believe. Joyce did various concept arts for Toy Story and A Bugs Life, and I guess he believed that they would faithfully adapt one of his stories.

In fact, Chris Wedge was going to almost give Pixar the rights to another book by Joyce: The Leaf Men, and did a little development on that, until Fox changed their minds, and Wedge kept the rights, and got Epic instead.

Shortly after maybe, Pixar may have wanted to adapt another Joyce story, decided on Dinosaur Bob, found out that another studio has the rights, and re-developed it into an original story based on Dinosaur Bob, which eventually turned into Good Dinosaur.

Again this is all theory, but Pixar might have wanted to an adaption of the book all along, especially if Lasseter had the idea, even before Toy Story. Maybe Joyce's an executive producer on the film, and creative consultant.

Dinosaur Bob would have made a good movie, here's a dramatic reading from Carl Frederickson himself. (begins at 2:52)

Pixar Post - T.J.
Harry, I love the thought for sure! We'll probably never really know - but if it were my guess, I'd surmise that The Good Dinosaur wasn't an adaptation of his Joyce's book. I wouldn't be surprised at all if John was inspired (whether consciously or unconsciously) by the story and possibly worked with Peterson to get it underway.

You've got to love a good deep thought like that - keep them coming! Oh, and again, that's just my guess - it doesn't mean any of us are right. Maybe we'll hear some more in the "art of" book when that comes out!
