Over the past few hours, very sad news has arrived.

Actor, comedian, and World War II veteran Don Rickles has died of kidney failure today, Thursday, April 6. His notable film roles have included Mr. Potato Head in all Toy Story media through and including the fourth movie, Casino, Zookeeper and many others.

We were deeply saddened to hear this news earlier today and wanted to do our best to pay our tribute to the actor and comedian in our post. We, of course, focused on his role of Mr. Potato Head, but also made sure to pass along some tidbits about the origins of his famed "hockey puck" line and asked a lot of open-ended questions about the fate of his character in the upcoming Toy Story 4. Take a look and let us know your thoughts - http://www.pixarpost.com/2017/04/don-rickles-potato-head-passes-away.html

Will his character return in TS4? Will they find a replacement vocal actor (seems almost impossible)? Were some of his lines already recorded (since he announced his return to TS4 in mid-2015)? But wait, what about the script changes which will inevitably happen due to the inclusion of Martin Hynes to the writing team? Ugh.

They could potentially just keep the character in the background and not give him lines, couldn't they? It's not like they don't have enough characters to fill screen time or anyone really goes to these things specifically for Potato Head (okay, I'm sure SOMEONE does, but it's most likely a minority). The contributions to the plot were non-existent in the second (as wonderful as the LGM jokes were) and I think one scene in the third anyway.

I realize it's not the exact same thing because he never really talked to begin with but that's what they did with Red. It seems like the simplest solution to me.

And dedicate the movie to the guy so people don't come out with accusations of not being respectful or something (and because it's a nice thing to do).

I think it would be tough to write Potato Head as just a background character since he's always out front and interjecting smart aleck comments often. That would go against his character traits since he even pipes up in the shorts/TV Specials (e.g., Partysaurus Rex, Toy Story of TERROR!, etc.). That being said, they could reduce his role and probably salvage lines he previously had recorded - but I don't think he could be solely reduced to a background character.

I'd also say that he has a lot more lines in Toy Story 3 than most recall - the scene where he gets thrown into "the box" and uses the tortilla and cucumber amount for a fair amount - plus other moments sprinkled throughout as well.

A tribute to him at the end would also be fantastic, and you can probably count on something being noted.

One quick update - it was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter that Don had not recorded any dialogue for Toy Story 4 before his passing.
