WARNING: Potential spoilers

Hello, everyone! I'm Harrison and I'm an avid Pixar Cars fan. I am very eager for the upcoming sequel and am curious as to why we know so little as of now (such as who's directing, plot points, concept art, etc.).

It would seem that there has been a dry spell of Cars 3 news. However, the good folks at Takefiveaday.com recently seemed to have struck gold. Two screenshots have surfaced of unreleased Mattel Cars diecasts that seem out of place in the current toy line. One is of Sally Carrera with a roof carrying case & trailer hitch, and the other is of Ramone with an elaborate two-tone paint job and a trailer hitch.
Here are the photos:

http://www.takefiveaday.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Sally-trailer.jpg

http://www.takefiveaday.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/ramone-trailer.jpg

The designs seem too detailed and specifically adorned to be counterfeit, and there have been no Toons or other media to feature these cars. The unreleased "To Protect and Serve" Toon would most likely not feature these two cars because they seem geared up for a road trip, and the short takes place within the vicinity of Radiator Springs (Besides, Ramone is seen with his standard purple paint job in a screenshot seen in the picture book version of the Toon).

When Michael Wallis was interviewed in 2013, he said that the film would "go back to the road" and explore California's historic Route 99. However, that was said before the news of the sequel was official. I dismissed his comments for their unofficial nature. But with these diecast leaks, the characters being suited for a road trip strongly supports what Wallis said.

If the film is about a road trip, that brings up some great potential for the Cars Characters! I think it's a relief to see the Pixar team return to the humbleness of having a good time on a road trip. However, this is still all just speculation. These leaked diecasts don't tell us much right now, but they still build up such anticipation for next year's mysterious film.

Here are some more photos I have found, courtesy of the great people at Carsthetoys.yuku.com. This one not only reveals more angles of Sally and Ramone, but it also shows a new Lightning McQueen and Fillmore!

McQueen and Fillmore are also seemingly decked out for a road trip. Given Ramone's hood graphics, McQueen's hood graphics, and Fillmore's little banner, they seem to be going down their very own Route 66!

Not sure if these are legit, but definitely interesting either way! Your source does mention that this was leaked on eBay, so definitely a tad sketchy, but they certainly look nice regardless of whether they're real or fake.

If the story is locked and loaded for Coco and they've started animation, then the same could probably be said for Cars 3 if Pixar is still intending on releasing it four months before Coco. Not sure how far in advance they start manufacturing merchandise though, but since the Cars franchise is huge in terms of merchandise revenue, Disney will probably want to take full advantage of Cars 3.

I'm not sure either, but if the fact that they put out Good Dinosaur toys based on Bob Peterson's movie is any indication I'm going to guess "Really far in advance".

They did put out Good Dinosaur action figures based off Bob Peterson's version of the film, that are actually being sold at Toys R Us and other retailers. Many fans asked where the certain dinosaurs that had tons of toys weren't in the actual film.

I am a bit surprised to see such diecasts leak over a year in advance as well. I recall seeing Cars 2 diecasts leaked only six or seven months before release. However, Cars has become so lucrative over the years that I guess Mattel wants to test their diecasts earlier on than before. As for The Good Dinosaur, I am surprised to see such characters as "Vivian" still sold in stores. Was there no one to double check the toy line with the film's final plot?

Given what we know of Cars 3's plot so far and Pixar's crazy production schedule these past two years, I don't think that these diecasts would be from a toon. If Pixar wasn't able to find time to finish/release "To Protect and Serve," then I think another toon would be out of the question. Good speculation, though. There's not enough evidence on the actual Cars 3 side of things to prove them as the film's diecasts. Only time will tell from here.

As a side note, the carsthetoys yuku link in my second post in this thread now has two more new diecasts: Flo and Sarge! Just click the link to see them.

For some reason I didn't come across this post until now; very interesting... As HCK so eloquently puts it, these are too good for counterfeits and there shouldn't be any new Toons, so I think there's no reason to think they wouldn't be in anticipation for Cars 3.

Just speculating, but regarding the greater time gap compared to Cars 2's die-cast leaks... In the case of Cars 2, 6-7 months of advance might have actually been quite early. Indeed, Cars 2 had its share of production problems and it seems they locked the story very late. Note that even then, we got die-casts for at least one character that doesn't appear in the film, Petrov Trunkov. Also coming to mind is Rod Redline's damaged version, which had little screen accuracy...
Again, this is all very heavy speculation from my part, but my point is, maybe getting Cars 3 die-casts now would be right on schedule, and that the shorter gap in Cars 2's case would actually be the abnormal one.

That is, assuming Cars 3 doesn't have any production problems.

Very good speculation, Gray. It is good to note that toy manufacturers would start work on their products as early as possible to sell said products as early as possible. Cars 2 could be an exception because of production troubles. Has anyone followed Cars diecasts long enough to remember when the diecasts for the first film were first revealed?

Unfortunately, assuming that these are Cars 3 diecasts would be wishful thinking. The folks at Takefiveaday.com are now under the impression that these are not for the sequel at all, and will be released in the fall/winter of this year. Here's what they have to say:

"It’s confirmed – well, as confirmed as can be.

These are NOT CARS 3 diecasts but a series called 'Road Trip.' It unconfirmed if that’s the actual title or the working title but you get the meaning of the series anyway."

Could they possibly be from an unnanounced toon? As aforementioned, only time will tell from here.

Ouch, there goes the Cars 3 hopes... It's true that in recent years Mattel has been releasing die-casts for several series that didn't have a Toons tie-in (Neon Racers, Ice Racers)... I had forgot about that.

Pixar Post - T.J.
The "racers" themes made sense because it all spawned from the idea of the world grand prix and each car held a themed race in their country. The fact that the road trip cars don't have any tie-in to anything else, really makes me curious...and of course lends itself to feel like another toon. With the fact that Take Five a Day is also saying that it's a Walmart exclusive also make the Toon theory hold up a bit more as they've had more toon exclusives than any other store.

Just an observation - since they all have hitches, it makes me think they'll have campers or additional luggage to tow (which could be pretty cool to incorporate into the story).

Bummer it's not a tie in to Cars 3 as well - since we're all very eager for info about that film!

I agree there's a certain difference from previous series. However, I'd still be surprised if we are to see any new Cars Toons. The crash of To Protect and Serve left me with the impression we would never again get a Cars Toons (most tangibly illustrated by Pixar Canada's shut down). Although on the other hand, perhaps it could be argued that a new Cars Toon would be a good way to remind people of this universe before a new film comes out...

If there's really to be a new Cars Toons, that would raise the question of what ever happened to To Protect and Serve. Is To Protect and Serve coming up soon, but might not have any die-casts? Or did Pixar decide to kill To Protect and Serve in favor of a newer short?

"To Protect and Serve" has been given diecasts by Mattel and The Disney Store, with a screencap appearing on Mattel's box art for the set. A picture book full of rendered screencaps has also been released. The peculiar thing is that these were all released over a year ago as of now. Pixar Posts' "first look' is over a year and a half old, and the short's announcement was nearly three years ago. The curious case of "To Protect and Serve" is one of the biggest recent Pixar mysteries. However, I don't think they'll can it. With the merchandise, rendered screen caps, and celebrity guest voices, a part of me still feels that the studio will release it sometime this year or next to build anticipation for Cars 3.

As for these "road trip" diecasts, I agree that they will just be a part of the expanded universe canon (like the racers). This only makes the story of Cars 3 so much more of a mystery to us.
