Pixar Post - T.J.
After seeing the extended The Blue Umbrella clip that was released today and reviewing the items that we've already seen in the short film, we decided that we wanted to start a discussion on the hidden items in The Blue Umbrella. The original topic of the hidden items in the short film started on our "hidden items post for Monsters U", but we thought this we'd start a separate discussion about the short as well!

Below are the items that we feel that we have seen - what do you think, have you seen any more?

1) Is this billboard of a six-wheeled car a nod to the short film, Mike's New Car? This image also appears in the basement of the Oozma Kappa house during Mike & Sulley's initiation.

2) The street sign that blinks super-fast to try and get the car to move out of the way and not run over "blue" has an 86 painted on it - assuming this is a nod to Pixar's year of incorporation.

On the Monsters U post that we mentioned above, user, "Gray Catbird" also recalled a certain image on the Rainy City Tales site which mentioned some other background elements (e.g., the Pizza Planet Truck). Did they make it into the film, or did they fall by the wayside to keep you (the viewer) "in the story"? Saschka Unseld had previously mentioned that some of the original background elements were removed because if they saw something too familiar from another Pixar movie, they would start to think about that movie, rather than the The Blue Umbrella.

Wow, amazing catch with the car billboard !! I think I'm going to love this topic !

After (over-)analyzing the newly released clip, I think I found some more inside jokes:

-One of the streets at which the action takes place is called "Hollis" (This can be seen in this still). Now it would be cool if the other street was called "Park" ! Pixar Animations Studios is located near the intersection of Park Ave. and Hollis St.

-The bus seen in the same scene as the six-wheeled car (circa 0:38 in the clip) has for destination "Hemberger Hill". There is a Pixarian called Allen Hemberger (which even has a Cars 2 die-cast named after him), so chances are it is not an accident...

-This one I first got from IMDb, and it isn't exactly an allusion to Pixar, but... When the floating Blue tries to reach Red, Red's owner is standing next to a bus stop, that has a poster in the window. This poster is actually a John Carter poster, as you can verify this by comparing this still with this Carter poster.

I've already mentioned this before, but I'll repeat it and expand on it. On January 24, 2013, Rainy City Tales 332 posted this video:

Pause it randomly, and with a bit of chance, you'll see that some of the neons are "Casa Della Tires", "Luigi's" and "Flo's Cafe". If you have seen Cars, this should ring a bell.
Problem is, to date, I have (almost) not see any of these three in the short. Yet other neons that appear in this video are well seen in the latest clip ("Motel", "Tattoo", "Fluido"), and the post suggests all the neons of the video are (or are intended) to be in the short...
However I just might have found an instance of the "Flo's Cafe" one. Again in the scene with the six-wheeled yellow car, left of this billboard there is a blue neon sign. I have trouble reading it... But it seems to read "[F]lo's Cafe"... What do you think ?

Does it shows I am a little obsessed with Pixar's latest short film ?

Holy cow - your analysis is amazing, Antoine! I love the catch of the Hemberger Hill reference - you have to be right that it's a reference to Allen!

It would be great if the other street was Park Ave - I guess we'll have to wait until Monsters U is released to see for sure (when we can freeze frame more of the short)!

Also, I think you are absolutely right about the Flo's Cafe sign - it appears to be the same in the Extended Clip as well as the "Dreams of Neon" video you embedded. I attached a screenshot from the Neon video that shows the full "Flo's Cafe" sign.

Yeah, I think it shows that you're a bit obsessed with The Blue Umbrella, but why wouldn't you be, it's a beautiful short film!?
