Long story in three sentences: Had to write a review of a current movie for spring semester. Chose How to Train Your Dragon 3. It was so bad it made me reconsider Toy Story 4, because it'd be difficult for it to be worse than it.

(Plus I saw carnivals in posters and carnival lighting from Pixar sounds amazing. And I'm mildly interested in the evolution of CG capes.)

So, I was hoping you guys would please answer a few questions to help me decide whether or not to go. I'm not looking at reviews because I don't think they'd touch on most of these, and I'm really only interested in knowing this stuff specifically beforehand.

1. Does the movie follow the meta comment trend, a la the teaser trailer with the rabbit and duck things?

2. How much time does the movie spend with the rabbit and duck things?

3. On a scale of Coco to How to Train Your Dragon 3 (1-10, not at all to fully) how forced are the sad scenes that I'm sure they'll go for?

4. How much would you say they succeeded at making Bo Peep an actual rounded character?

Thanks guys

1. I don’t remember the film having anything meta at all. Think that was just the Ducky and Bunny teaser thing.

2. Ducky and Bunny are present on screen for a good portion of the film but they are used very well. They aren’t overused.

3. I’d say the sad scenes are probably on par with Toy Story 3 in how they are presented. It feels very natural though and doesn’t feel very forced.

4. Bo is probably the standout character of the film. It’s incredible how she went from a throwaway character in the first two films to this. Woody and Bo’s relationship has been completely fleshed out in this film and is very well written.

While I’m not sure you’ll think this film is a necessary. They do a fantastic job of achieving their goals for this film. It’s beautiful, well written and emotionally satisfying.

I didn’t think I needed another one after 3, but this is fantastic. It shows a natural evolution for Woody’s character.

1) I agree with Arlo, I don't remember much meta from the characters either. The humor is based on its own world and bending the rules that we've grown familiar with from the movies, but nothing really outside of them from what I remember..

2) A good deal, but they're supporting characters. The film certainly doesn't revolve around them, and when they aren't warranted, they don't show as much then.

3) Now, I'm a big crybaby and cry easily, so I'm probably not the best person to judge this question, but...the opening title made me tear up due to nostalgia, certain scenes with Gabby Gabby made me watery...and the ending did as well, though really not as much as TS3, in my opinion.

4) I really liked Bo in this film! She's a strong female, but the film shows that she's just as much Woody's equal as she is his love interest. It's not just googly-eyes between the both of them; they have conversations and catch up and bond. They argue, which is a first for the two, but Bo's grown in the gap between TS2 and this film as much as Woody has, we just haven't seen that growth (yet). She was a lot of fun to watch, for me.

It's not the best Toy Story film by far for me, and...yeah, it may not be even necessary in the grand scheme of things. But it is an enjoyable film with a good story, fun new characters, and the music surprised me quite a bit - there were a lot of musical call-backs that I remember hearing from the first Toy Story film that I hadn't heard at all in later films, so that was a pleasant surprise for me. It is gorgeous, of course - but you already knew that.

I say take a chance and go ahead and see it, if you have the chance to. There are worse movies to spend your money and time on, and if the worse happens and you don't like it, at least you can say you gave it a fair chance and saw it - it just wasn't your cup of tea.

I hope this helps! 🙂

Thanks a lot for the replies, guys! Some of this is a really pleasant surprise to hear. I'm convinced, and will be making an effort to see it before it leaves theaters.

Fingers crossed I like it. ðŸ˜‰
