I was thinking about Bing Bong's design today.

While I love it, I am a little confused by the pink elephant-raccoon-cotton candy hybrid thing he has going on. I have never had an imaginary friend, but I always thought that people who did have them saw them as humans of the same age.
So I ask, have you guys ever had any imaginary friends? If so, did you see them as human, or some fantasy creature, like Riley does?

I think I read that Riley was 3 when she dreamed up Bing Bong because "animals were al the rage."

My mom told me I used to have one, but i don't remember him. I feel bad now. LoL. But every kid has different imaginations, Riley was a HUGE goofball after all while growing up, so she probably does have the personality to create an elephant, raccoon, skunk thing hobo as an imaginary friend.

Pixar Post - T.J.
Hmm - I did have an imaginary friend. His name was John, he wore green pants, had a very thick mustache and carried a briefcase. Joking aside, he kind of looked like Riley's Dad! Ha! [Big-Grin_zps23ec4c40]

He would be able to match whatever I was pretending to do at the time - so, if I was a businessman, he was ready with pens and paper...if I was imagining I was a spy, his briefcase would hold more sleuthing equipment. Basically, the briefcase would hold whatever I needed to match what I was imagining at that time. He wore green pants because it was my favorite color and I have no idea where the mustache came from (or why). He was named John was because it's my middle name.

Him, very interesting, T.J..(By the way, when I say your name at the end of a sentence, do I put a period or not, because there already is one?)
John is more like I thought imaginary friends would be. Able to conjure up whatever the kid needs, etc. Bing Bong is not a real name, and he only has a rocket, which Riley actually built. He also is not human.

I am starting to think that Pixar made him look the way he does for creativity's sake, rather than logic.

I was an extremely unimaginative child, I just daydreamed about movie and tv show characters. [Laughing_zpsee77b0c4]

Have you ever heard of the TV show "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends"? It's completely full of weird looking imaginary friends. Not a real life example, obviously, but clearly inhuman creatures for imaginary friends is not an idea restricted to Pixar, at the very least.

I think that's just the thing about imaginary friends; they're really, really, really varied. Whatever they say about Bing Bong in the "Art of Inside Out" must be really interesting, because this is a character they pretty much literally could have done anything with.
