The news that Josh Cooley (director of Toy Story 4) is directing a Transformers animated prequel for Paramount broke a couple of hours ago. The film will be separate from the Michael Bay live-action Transformers films and will focus on Megatron and Optimus Prime's relationship. The film is written by the writing team behind Ant-Man and the Wasp.

I was personally a little surprised by this news since I was under the impression that Cooley was working on a Pixar original, and that I've heard he's played a pretty significant part in the making of Soul as well.

But this film does have me intrigued now.

Thoughts?

Yeah this is pretty shocking to me.  Seemed like he was being set up to have a bigger role with Pixar going forward.

Thanks for the share, Arlo

Here's the original article for anyone interested (from Deadline). Agreed that this is surprising, but, it doesn't mean his days at Pixar are over. He may be following the path of Brad Bird or Andrew Stanton — just making a film with another company and coming back?

He has to be completely excited about this project though since he's all about '80s toys. I'm happy for him, but also bummed that this means he'll be out of the Pixar fold for a while.

Josh also confirmed the news with a tweet around Midnight PT.

For good measure, I asked him on Twitter what this means for this tenure at Pixar — let's see if he replies.

This is definitely interesting, because im pretty sure he said he was working on a feature at Pixar. I wonder why he chose to take this film on and how it will impact his work at Pixar

I was just thinking this the other night. Seems really odd Josh just yeeted out of Pixar like that to make a Transformers movie of all things. Maybe it was just too cool a thing for him to pass up.

I think this is just a side project for him while he's developing his Pixar original in his head. Also, I never, ever expected to see the word ''yeet'' on this site.

It's just my go too for whenever someone takes off quickly, lol.

And that could also be the case. Odds are if Josh did do a Pixar feature it wouldn't come out until like 2025. He could finish this Transformers flick and come back to Pixar ready to go with something good. Or maybe he'll stay at Paramount, I don't know the guy lmao.

Well apparently Cooley left Pixar in March.

"Creating films and telling stories at Pixar for 17 years has been a dream,” said Cooley in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “The quality of our storytelling was a direct correlation to the quality of the people at Pixar who shaped those stories together, and they will always be my family. And while it was a hard decision to leave, I am so excited to jump into and create new worlds with new collaborators and partners. There are so many stories that I want to tell, and I hope to bring some of that Pixar magic with me wherever I go.”

I wonder why he left. I was sure that he would've started working on an original at Pixar soon after Toy Story 4. And didn't Yahoo Entertainment interview him and he said he was working on another Pixar film?
