Remember that scene where the two workers send the chewing gum jingle memory back to Headquarters? Why didn't Joy just send the core memories back through that?

Then, again it is nitpicking.

It actually was brought up by UntoldStories and I certainly thought that too on my first viewing. My only self-explanation for this is that had this been brought up, it's possible Joy was afraid the other Emotions might have to handle the Core Memory and "contaminate it" like Sadness did (even if we had seen Fear handled the (non-Core) Joyful Memories fine)

But yeah, no one in-context really brought that up.

I actually did pop the question in the Tvtropes Headscratchers and got these two answers, the first answer pretty much coinciding with mine.

Quote:
When seeing how the Triple Gum Commercial gets sent to Riley's mind, why didn't Joy attempt to use the Recall to send the Core Memories back so Riley could at least have re-powered Islands?
  • Well if Sadness touching the Core Memories changes the spheres from Joy to Sadness, why wouldn't the other emotions have the same effect? Maybe Joy didn't want to risk it.
  • It's possible that Joy didn't want the Core Memories leaving her sight. She's highly protective of them, after all.

I think the reason Joy didn't send the core memories up through there is because she didn't know how to use that, it wouldn't play itself on demand, the other Emotions at Headquarters might not have been able to get a hold of the memories (since they randomly played whenever without letting anybody know when), and maybe it didn't work on core memories.

So glad I'm not the only one who was bothered by that. [wink] Ava-Kane, yes, I also believe that Joy being afraid of the other Emotions touching the memories would work as an explanation (because we saw Fear handle the joyful memories while Joy didn't), but only if it had actually been brought up in the movie. But the way the possibility is not even mentioned at that point just makes it seem as if Joy had caught the Idiot Ball.

And Peace_Love_Pixar, yeah, all good points. And if either of those would have been mentioned as the reason, I probably would've bought the dismissal of the opportunity without complaint. It just irks me that it was ignored with no explanation.

But oh well, it's certainly not the only plot hole in there. If I find the time, I'll make a list. [wink] Though now that I've had a little time to think about the movie, I can certainly appreciate its message and atmosphere a lot more than before despite its problems.

Maybe because they are core memories and maybe there is an unmentioned rule that they can't be treated like normal memories? Or yes, maybe Joy is just scared that the emotions back in HQ will change them.

I actually didn't think of that until now.
I guess to me, the film's story made it seem like separating herself from the core memories is absolutely out of question for Joy, which I accepted without thinking.
But when you think about it, why she didn't try is a very valid question.

I don't think Joy would be afraid that the memories change emotions in the hands of the others. It is suggested that it's only Sadness that has the ability to change the emotion of a memory, as evidenced when Joy tries in vain to change it back the first time it happens.
As already pointed out by others though, Joy seemed very protective of the core memories, so it could be something along the same lines. She never wanted to separate herself from them because she was afraid they would be lost in something bad would happen to them.

When thinking about that recall tube, I got pretty much the same ideas as Peace_Love_Pixar. Perhaps it doesn't work. But UntoldStories113 is right, that wasn't said in the film.
Still, the mind world being made entirely from scratch... It gives the filmmakers a lot of space for creativity license... So... I can forgive it without too much difficulty.

It doesn't revise the fact that the film didn't really cue us into this explanation (especially with Sadness around who was often pointing out the shortcoming in Joy's plans), but Pete Docter was asked about this and had this response.

Okay, I do have to ask one thing. When it came to the core memories, why didn't she just push those through the hole and send them back up to headquarters the way they were doing with that commercial they kept throwing on a loop?

PD: Ah ha! We discussed that along the way and it was one of those things where we kind of boxed ourselves in a corner a little bit. We added the recall thing later, when they were doing the song that got stuck in her head. Our argument was that Joy wouldn't trust the memories would be fine on their own, she needed to be up there too.

Yeah, I was watching and just thinking to myself well she should just toss those things in there too and be done with it.

PD: Yeah, well then we wouldn't have a third act. [laughing]

...well, at least he's aware of it. [wink] That's something. [tongue]

Thanks for sharing! [smile]

Maybe Joy just wanted to deliver them herself, so the others didn't mess the memories up. Like what Sadness did.
