The ET interview (as Pixarsuperfan8695 shared above) was a good one because they included their 1-on-1 questions rather than the other write-ups which are rehashes of the group session. The interesting note here was about how the original characters were humans.

"I saw a sketch you drew in 2014 of two brothers and their half dad, but they were very normal-looking brothers. Human brothers."

Scanlon: Yeah. In the very early days, those were the things we knew we wanted and we were trying to figure out, "Well, how do you bring back half a dad?" They were just regular people and had figured out some contraption or something -- I can't remember -- and to be honest, it was just kind of boring. It didn't have the fun that this had. And then we thought, "We've got magic. We should use magic more." And the idea of a modern fantasy world with creatures instead of humans just lends itself to animation so much more. A lot of the fantasy stuff [we'd seen] was very realistic character design, so the idea of doing more cartoon-y, fun-to-animate fantasy creatures was something that seemed really fun.

I also like when they asked how the title of Onward originated. The working title that he heard about prior to the film's announcement was Trio (as a fun side note). ÃƒÂ°Ã…¸Ëœâ€°

"You've said the story took you a long time to crack, but how did you decide on Onward as a title? Was it always going to be called Onward?"

Scanlon: It was a super hard movie to title. It's like Up. If you had to come up with another name for Up, it's a hard one, because it's such a unique movie. We were a little in that camp. Later in the movie, you hear Barley saying the word "onward," and it's a very Barley word because it's from the past. Some folks pointed it out to us as a potential title and we loved it because it was so positive and it feels like a journey. This is a coming-of-age movie, and it's also a movie about moving on from tragedy and tough stuff, so Onward felt perfect. It encompasses both the emotional part of it and just the big fun journey.

Two nuggets from a new Yahoo! Entertainment interview with Producer, Kori Rae are below.

Kori noted — "We've had the ending of the film from the very, very beginning. And so that has been our stake in the ground so to speak, and so I think that ending... people really responded to [it] at the time when we first pitched it.”
----
Yahoo Interviewee — There seems to be a 70s rock aesthetic to it - prog-rock record covers specifically - particularly with Barley...

"For him, yes. There were versions of the film where he was way more into music, and we shifted away from that. But he was a bard at some point or something in one of the many versions of the film that we worked on. But I think what we wanted, the character aspect of that, is just that he's brash and loud and into fantasy rock. Just because it would be annoying to Ian."
-----

Pretty cool that Barley was going to be in a band at one point...and that they always had the ending. I can see how Barley being in a band would distract and not add to the story though...unless it could tie into explaining why he knew the history of fantasy/magic through his lyrics or something like that.

A lawsuit regarding the van in Onward has been announced, alleging Pixar used a real-life van without permission as inspiration for the movie.

Personally, I think this might have legitimate grounds, but as usual, people are taking advantage of the judiciary system to get more than reasonable/fair compensation (there’s no way the film would get blocked from release, not to mention to trial probably would be long after the film has been released; and blocking all merch is asking too much because the van isn’t a part of even close to every piece of merch), and for reasons of both the necessity of more information and excessive charges are at this time, not making me agree with the plaintiff.

Deadline is reporting projections of $44 Million for the Onward opening weekend. The article notes that this is lower than normal because of the March opening, but that it could go up. I'd rather have them underestimate like this because when they overestimate it gets sticky because if the film doesn't hit the (completely estimated) revenue expectation, bad press ensues. It is interesting how low the projection is though — that doesn't instill a lot of confidence.

To put this in perspective, Toy Story 4 was projected to have a $200 Million opening weekend (and made $120 Million). Incredibles 2 was projected at $110 Million (and made $180 Million). Inside Out was projected to make $71 Million (and made 90.4 Million). The Good Dinosaur was projected at $60 Million (and made $39 Million).

Sonic the Hedgehog was estimated at $45 Million.

Hopefully it get more than that, and it will likely have strong legs throughout March, as no other animated movies come out until Troll World Tour.

According to Yahoo Lifestyle, Onward will be the first Disney film to feature an openly gay character.

Wow, that's interesting, but not all that surprising that the film would be delayed with the status of the Corona virus. It's unfortunate for sure. Welcome to the forum as well K.IKetani!!

One other thing to note is that the low estimates for the opening weekend are starting to creep up and globally they're anticipating up to a $100 million opening. Even the lower side of $40 million domestically is being bumped up to $50 million (as noted in this Deadline article). The article also talks about the delays in countries and theaters overall.

I just saw the film for the second time - fewest number of people I've seen both times for a brand new Pixar movie, which breaks my heart. I hope Pixar gives this film a bit of grace if the numbers don't come out as well as they were hoping for because of the virus. 😟

But I found out today about Quests of Yore is becoming an actual game! I've never played a tabletop RPG before, but I've always wanted to. They always seemed kind of overwhelming to me; maybe this would make for a good introduction.
