We recently wrote our review of the Small Fry director's commentary (from the Pixar Short Films Collection 2[image] Blu Ray) with Angus MacLane and it made us ponder a few things.
  1. Which is your favorite meal toy character from Small Fry?
  2. What is/was your favorite meal toy from your own life?

My favorites from the short are (in order) with my reason why:

  1. Beef Stewardess - because it's just so ridiculous it's hilarious! Plus, her vest inflates!
  2. Funky Monk - because why would this ever be made and because of how he says, Sup!
  3. Gary Grappling Hook - He just seems fun
  4. Tae-Kwon Doe - Just because it's hilarious again!
  5. Lizard Wizard - I love his voice, motions and the fact that the character is...well...a lizard who is also a wizard!
  6. Franklin - Who wouldn't love an eagle in a rolled up Declaration of Independence car with quarters as wheels! [Smug_zpsbec03801]
  7. Recycle Ben - The thought of a recycling bin as a toy is just great!

Finally, from my own personal vault and life, by far my favorite toys I got in a McDonald's Happy Meal were the Muppet Baby toys from 1986/1987. My favorite of the bunch was the Kermit with the skateboard and then the Gonzo on the big wheel! I found these at my Parent's house about a year or so ago and immediately grabbed them to take back to my house! I immediately zoomed back to my childhood as soon as I saw them.

So who are your favorites from Small Fry and what was your favorite meal toy?

Ok, this post is too awesome. Great idea guys!!

My top 7 for the hilarious fun meal toys in the short (as hard as it is to narrow it down) are:
1.) Recycle Ben
2.) T-Bone
3.) Garry Grappling Hook
4.) Ghost Burger
5.) DJ Blu Jay
6.) Funky Monk
7.) Lizard Wizard

I don't have very specific reasons of why for each one, I just chose the ones I remember laughing out loud with the first time I saw the film. Nonetheless, they're all hilarious and super creative! I just love how they took the absolute randomness of a lot of the fast food toys out there and went all out with that. It just cracks me up how these characters are total exaggerations of real Happy Meal toy concepts, but in reality, some of them aren't totally far off, ha! It must have been hard to narrow down the countless ideas the creative team must have had since they could basically be as random as they wanted. I would love to see the abandoned ideas and concept art that was done for the film. Also, the idea of rejected "fun meal toys" needing physiological help is just brilliant, since those types of cheap toys are almost always abandoned, lost or broken. Genius.

For my favorite real happy meal toys growing up, there are just so many! As you can probably guess knowing me, I loved collecting fast food toys. I remember as a little kid going around to all the local Mcdonald's and Burger Kings trying to track down the ones I needed. In fact, they would let you see what they had and buy it without a happy meal...not sure if they still do that. Also, yah, totally remember the pain of getting duplicates! HA!

The ones that came to my mind right off the bat were:
This Tarzan set (2000). I LOVE chain reaction type things and collecting smaller parts that make up a bigger items so this was a favorite back in the day. I still have it and all the pieces! Still works.

This Inspector Gadget set (1999). Again, seeing a theme? Loved the thrill of getting all the smaller parts to make up this massive toy. Once assembled, it was probably the biggest happy meal toy ever made! It was about a foot tall. I remember my sister was dating a guy that had Mcdonald's connections and he sent me all the parts I still needed in the mail. Still remember opening that package up like it was yesterday!

And T.J., LOVED Muppet Babies when I was a kid. I watched that show a TON. I didn't have the ones you showed, but speaking of Muppets, I loved the Muppet Treasure Island ones as well (1996). In fact, I just found them recently in my basement! Good memories.

There are so many more favorites that come to mind such as the Happy Meal TY beanie babies (yes I was caught up in that craze had quite the Beanie Baby collection back in the day), the Animal Kingdom ones (when the park had just opened), the Mulan ones, the A Bug's Life ones and the Toy Story ones to name a few.

Good times, nice to stroll down memory lane, or, head into our "personal vaults" for a bit.

One more thought...I just recently noticed that the "Vampire Express" Dracula looks strikingly familiar..has a very similar Dracula shown up in another Angus Maclane directed short film? [smile]

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

My favorite Small Fry character is Gary Grappling Hook. I love the little stuff he says, and I can't get enough of his eyes on the hook part of him!
After Gary, mine would have to be Recycle Ben(I got recycled!) And Vampire Express(Awooooooo! Chugga chugga)
[IMG_20140710_083358_zps2bbc3e43]  My favorite meal toy was the whole Cars series released for the film back in 2006. Each of the cars was a tad bigger than their die-cast counterparts. Each car had a special ability, like the pull-back-and-go you see everywhere, or the ability to twist the direction of the wheels. By the way, Dan, I got these cars without having to get the Happy Meal. Unfortunately, I have misplaced all of the cars but Filmore, who has the pull-back-and-go quality.
