Pixar Post - T.J.
I reached out to a few folks to see what info is safe or not to post - so we'll see what we hear and if we get any new info. That is exciting news indeed to see more of what the team is working on. Hearing anything at this point is exciting! 😍

I was surprised at how early on the animation began on this one. Animation usually begins 8-12 months in advance of release, but he could be referring to pre-production. If it’s currently on post-production, I feel like the date was set so as to be able to complete animation on time with all the current work from home conditions.

I mean thus could be the March film if I had to guess. They probably are starting early to have more time for the deadline.

I don't think it's too early if he's the Supervising Animator - it will be early tests for sure at that point.

Yeah, I thought so too. Once I read the caption, I felt like it meant just the Pre-pro animators doing tests and character development. But seeing as everyone’s working from home, I started to wonder if  the schedule was expanded to make sure everything would get done on time—but now that I think of it, I’m pretty sure the post-production animators still have time to work on other features before coming onto this one.

They start on these things 8-12 months in advance!?!? No way. I thought it was a 24 month process? I read that somewhere a few years ago. 8 months seems way too fast. If so they must work hard!

Two comments - the animation process varies in timing. Some movies like, Inside Out, the process was different because they had less animators that worked on longer scenes whereas some other films are "all hands on deck" where many animators collaborate and split scenes up into small chunks to spread it out (outside of a few animators that work on key scenes). Then, you have other teams that go in and do clean-up, crowds animation, and so on - so, I guess both answers are possible, but I'd say most films are a straight 24 months.

Now that I'm thinking about it more, it is possible that it could be extended because of being dispursed out and having all the artists work at home...but, that was also commonplace when Pixar Canada was open (though most of the people with the remote animation expertise and leadership are gone). I guess that's a long way of saying that anything is possible at this point with the world being all upside down still! 😜

Second quick update - I wouldn't expect to hear any specific announcements regarding the 2022 movie anytime soon.

That probably meant including pre-production work. Animators on Onward started on dailies and their shots in approximately April of 2019, and wrapped up roughly early September. The animation department on the 2022 film would be starting pre-production about now.
Edit—Here’s a tweet from Frank Abey from a year back. With him starting animation just recently before that date, that gives him pretty much 12 months to work on his shots. 6EBA3461-CF97-4AA3-B971-BC87FCC0ACDA.jpeg

Even if they plan on starting animation early I doubt it would be two years ahead. Its probably pre production like what others said
