Andrew Wellman
Hi--Hope I'm asking this in the most appropriate forum. (I'd also be quite surprised if I'm the very first person to wonder about this.)

I received a blu-ray player for xmas, and have spent the past several months upgrading a Pixar DVD that stretches back to the "Ultimate Toy Box".

Only one thing is truly nagging me: While each of the pre-2008 Pixar DVD's contained the teaser trailer for what would be the next Pixar film, and while several of the teaser trailers for pre-2008 Pixar films can be found on Pixar blu-ray titles, either as a bonus feature or as a "sneak peek", other teasers have apparently been shelved.

I originally speculated that the reason the "Monsters, Inc." teaser may not have been included on the blu-ray was because it, more so than the film itself, creates a continuity issue with "Monsters University". (Sully: "Remember the fifth grade? When you spent all your timme passing notes to Susie Boils?") Yet as I continue chronologically through these titles, the teasers for "Cars" and "Ratatouille" are also missing.

I can't be the only person out there who's sort of bummed out by I?

I'm kind of confused on what you're doing. "Upgrading a DVD"? Are you cutting one together from various other DVDs or something? If that's what you're doing you can probably get them off Youtube.

I meant to write that I'm upgrading my Pixar collection from DVD to Blu-ray. Sorry.

Pixar Post - T.J.
First off - hey Andrew, welcome to the forum - we're glad you're here.

You are correct that they do change the DVD's and Blu-ray's. You're not alone in noticing that the teasers have been removed from the Blu-ray's and I don't think it's for continuity purposes or anything, I think they just don't see the value in adding teasers for upcoming films there any longer.

Yeah, it's a bummer they're not the same, but there are other changes as well which are interesting as well. For example, in one of the versions of Monsters, Inc. (on DVD) they included an audio track where you could only listen to the sound effects for the film (which was AWESOME)...but after the 2002 release of the DVD, this track was removed in any future releases. That's just one example of how they change the DVDs over time - overall the Blu-ray's contain more content, but some of it is removed along the way sadly.

Pixar's redesigned website offers a lot of the teasers now as well - for example, before they redesigned their site, the A Bug's Life teaser was only found online in a terrible resolution from an old VHS scan, but now you can view it in a much higher resolution. We compare the teasers in this post on our site (check it out). So, maybe that can be the new go-to for teasers! [Silly_zps7c205e8c]

Ah! thank you--although I do tend to be wary when I'm on the official Pixar website, as I'm trying to avoid any spoilers for the upcoming films and shorts (I already know too much about "Toy Story 4".)

I know that I can't expect the blu-rays to port over absolutely everything from the DVD releases; another example, similar to the one you mentioned, is the full-screen version of "A Bugs Life" and the featurette about the two versions of the film. I can see why that material was deemed unnecessary for the blu-ray, but at the same time, it was a feature which made the original 2-disc DVD verion of ABL one of the most groundbreaking releases of its day.

In the meantime, I'm going to hang on to my Pixar DVD collection as examples of memorable uses of the DVD format. Pixar has poured as much energy and creativity into some of their home video releases as they have into their feature films and shorts. And I was surprised and please to find that some of the little DVD menu bumpers from "Finding Nemo" found their way to the blu-ray release.

But I would still make the case that the "Cars" teaser is as memorable, subversive, and hilarious as anything Pixar has ever created, and absolutely deserves to be preserved in 1080p HD and avilable on blu-ray.
