Pixar Post - T.J.
Pixar has just announced (via the LA Times) that The Good Dinosaur's original May 30, 20145 release date has now been pushed to 2015. The release date for the film has been an almost consistent point of discussions since Pixar announced that Bob Peterson would no longer be Directing the film late last month.

[Pixar+Post+-+The+Good+Dinosaur+and+Finding+Dory+release+date+change+1]

The Good Dinosaur is now slated to be released on November 25, 2015 and if that date sound familiar that is because it was the original release date of Finding Dory. So what does that mean for the Nemo spinoff? Well, Finding Dory is now slated for a summer 2016 release date. In a effort to put people's minds at ease, Pixar's President, Ed Catmull noted, "Nobody ever remembers the fact that you slipped a film, but they will remember a bad film," said Pixar's president, Ed Catmull. "Our conclusion was that we were going to give the [dinosaur] film some more time."

Currently, the film is still listed with the directing team of Lee Unkrich, Mark Andrews, John Lasseter and the film's original co-director, Peter Sohn. No news was announced as to who the film's final director will be as the film steps back to the story department.

So, what are your thoughts? Does this move make sense for the movie? How do you feel about Finding Dory also being pushed back?

Unfortunately this means that there won't be a 2014 Pixar release. [Crying2_zpsc5563869] As bummed as this makes us, if it means that The Good Dinosaur will become a better film, we're all for it!

I wish they would've bumped Inside Out up. Then we may be satisfied for another year. Or if they re-release all the previous films, in the order they came out, throughout the year.

i like to think the chances are pretty good that with Inside Out being the next in line, it may pick up the pace. we could see Christmas 2014. but thats very lucky.

but first and foremost, im rather bummed about no The Good Dinosaur next year. i had assumed they were behind schedule when we didn't see a trailer before MU, so i wasn't surprised when the Bob Peterson announcement was made. And this certainly doesn't surprise me either, but to an extent. i always thought that if The Good Dinosaur was postponed, it would be like six months.. not a year and some odd months. But with Lassater, Unkrich, Andrews, and Sohn working on it. Im certain we can expect a great film in 2015.

oh and hears hoping that Newt has been in secret development all this time and that we'll get to see it next year.

Of course just like everyone else, I'm super bumbed that we won't be seeing a Pixar film next year but I KNOW it's for the best...I guess in the long run it will be pretty sweet though to get 2 films in 2015! That sure will make up for this. It's crazy that Inside Out is the next Pixar film now!

So lets see...
Toy Story-A Bug's Life (Nov 1995-1998): 3 years
A Bug's Life-Toy Story 2 (Nov 1998-1999): 1 Year
Toy Story 2-Monsters Inc (Nov 1999-2001): 2 years
Monsters Inc-Finding Nemo (Nov 2001-May 2003): 1 year 6 months
Finding Nemo-The Incredibles (May 2003-Nov 2004): 1 year 6 months
The Incredibles-Cars (Nov 2004-June 2006): 1 Year 7 months
Cars-Ratatouille-Walle-UP-Toy Story 3-Cars 2-Brave-Monsters University: ALL 1 year apart
Monsters University-Inside Out (June 2013-June 2015): 2 years

So this is the longest wait for a Pixar film since Toy Story 2- Monsters Inc!

ALSO, what does this mean for the Monsters U short film, Party Central? We we still get that next year with some movie like Small Fry was with the Muppets? Or maybe another Pixar film will get  a 3D release and it will be with that? It is the 10 year anniversary next year for The incredibles after all. Interesting... : )

Noooooooo! Of course this is awful with no 2014 movie, but like T.J. said, if it means more time for the story to develop and improve, than it will be worth the wait and anticipation when I walk into that theatre. I think that what Ed Catmull said probably makes fans feel confident about the film, including myself.
And who knows, maybe Pixar will sub in some more Shorts because of no 2014 movie?
Speaking of shorts, when will the "Party Central" short come out if TGD is pushed back?
Great timeline, PixarFanDan! :-)

I'm very bummed that there will be no Pixar film next year. But Like Rachel, I'm hoping for Inside Out to get moved to 2014. I'm hoping that The Good Dinosaur turns out better with another year and halfish of production.

So, wait, I'm confused. I thought there already was an untitled Pixar film coming out on June 17, 2016. So is Finding Dory taking that spot? And if so, what happens to the film previously scheduled for that time slot? Does it slide back to a winter release? Maybe Pixar ends up with 2 films in each of 2015, 2016 and 2017! Truthfully, that seems too much.

Pixar Post - T.J.
Whew - this is a great set of posts and thoughts.
  1. @PixarFanDan, thanks for putting the timeline together - that was great to see it like that!
  2. @PixarFanDan and @mac95 - Julie and I chatted about Party Central on our Podcast that we recoded today and I really, really want to know what will happen to that short? Will it just sit there and wait until November 25, 2015? That seems too long to wait doesn't it? I love Dan's suggestion of putting it ahead of another movie...but the issue there is that most movies that are coming out soon already would have a short slated already. So, here are my top three thoughts on what they will do with it...a) It will become a web exclusive, b) it will still be on the Monsters U Blu Ray (as originally rumored), or c) It will find it's way ahead of Muppets Most Wanted (in theaters March 21, 2014).
  3. @Rachel Cranor and @bunfoo - I'd love to see Inside Out move up in its release date as well, but I really can't see that happening. Has a Pixar film ever been released ahead of its originally scheduled date? I think there are too many moving pieces from vocals, to sound design, to lighting, etc to move a film like this up. Obviously stranger things have happened, but if I could guess, I wouldn't see it.
  4. @ThisDayInPixar - You are absolutely correct that there was another film slated to be released on June 17, 2016 - Julie and I speculated that it would be Lee Unkrich's film (based on Dia de los Muertos), but that was never officially announced. It would certainly appear that since they said that Finding Dory is moved to the summer of 2016 that they wouldn't have two movies hitting that summer. I guess since any of the 2016 films were never officially announced they can be coy in stating what will be coming after Finding Dory. I also have to completely agree with you that two films a year for a stream of multiple years in a row would be too much. That's odd to say as a Pixar fan, but I really like the downtime to really absorb the movie, read the books and analyze the DVD...plus, the wait builds excitement for the next release! My guess is with how much Pixar has changed dates over the last several releases that some of the other untitled (and unknown) projects we've previously heard dates for will also be pushed back to 2018 and 2019.

Wow, great insight everyone! Here's where we'll ask for your opinions on a few more areas as well...on Episode 20 of our podcast we asked for our listener's feedback about changes to The Good Dinosaur and asked,
  1. About your overall feelings for the date change.
  2. With any story changes that may take place, do you feel that the dinosaurs will still remain farmers?
  3. Who do you think will ultimately shake out to be the final lead director of the film?
Feel free to reply with a comment here, but we'd love if you'd also leave your thoughts on those questions on our voice mail line so we can compile the general feedback of our audience to include clips in our next podcast.  You can leave a voice mail at (415) 799-POST(7678).

i had heard a story that Disney decided to put the breaks on all movies because of all the money they lost with The Lone Ranger. you think maybe this had something to do with it? i don't see how it can/should affect Pixar. but it could make sense.

@ThePixarPost Nice speculation T.J. about the Party Central release options! I can definitely see it happening with the Muppets Most Wanted because 1-Small Fry was released with the Muppets in 2011 ...2-becuase it seems like it would be perfectly on schedule and 3-because it has been said that the look of the Muppets had a lot to do with the inspiration for the monsters in Monsters! I cantotally see that happening.

I would love to see it back on the DVD/Blu Ray but I wonder if it's too close now to make that change? That would be AWESOME though since we're all so exited for that one.

I think ultimately it will get a theatrical release though as that was the reason it was taken off the DVD to begin with...cause it was just that good that it needed to be on the big screen. Hopefully we'll hear an update soon!

As far as my thoughts on the podcast...i left a comment on that page if you're interested in checking it out!  [smile]

Wait no 2014 Pixar movie? Pixar-less a whole year! NOOOOOOOOOOO! Well, I hope they do something that year. Maybe, a Toy Story of Terror Blu-ray or a Pixar shorts Volume 3.

It is disappointing that there will be no Pixar film released next year, but it's for the best I'm sure. The Good Dinosaur needs more time to become a better film. Hopefully they can pull it off in time, but I'm sure they will. I mean, it's Pixar!

BTW, T.J. you said to be as picky as possible, and I noticed another mistake. This time on this post. On your first post, you posted May 30, 20145 instead of May 30, 2014. Your welcome! [tongue]
