I'm not sure what the signifance of this is - but I felt I should post it.

Remember this story?

Interview wrote:
Lasseter knew he had done well, but wasn't sure just how well, until he and his family were returning from a vacation at Walt Disney World. "We stopped and changed planes at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport," he remembers. "Getting off the plane, my son said, `Daddy! Daddy! Look!' And there was a little boy, about four years old, with his mom, clearly waiting for his dad, he was so excited...and he was holding a Woody doll. It all came home at that point. I realized how these films really touch people."

Today, on the way back from the supermarket, I saw a young girl with her mother heading in the other direction.  The young girl was clutching - I soon saw - a Bullseye doll, flopping but looking proud all the same.  I noticed that there were cow-skin trousers on the top of Bullseye - and soon I saw Jessie's face peeking out from her arm.

It reminded me of this story, and I think it serves to highlight the importance of the Toy Story franchise and the impact it's had.  I doubt that the girl saw the film in cinemas when it first came out - though I could be wrong, I guess.  And yet the series had made an impact on her, for here she carried these characters triumphantly through the town centre.  The characters must mean something to her - but in a different way to more grown-up fans.

Toy Story 4 is looming, and I hope that John Lasseter is fully aware of this story to be true again.  We need TS4 to be good - we don't personally, but people like this girl do.  It sounds like John is aware of this, though possibly it's too early to say - but it's possible that we could be on to a winner.

...Going by this logic does this mean Planes and Minions are important movies? They sell a bunch of toys, too.

I'm willing to call Toy Story important for other reasons, but this...is not a good way to measure, in my opinion.

I was a former toy collector for both Toy Story and Planes. Toy Story is a great franchise without toys, and so is Planes (but many critics hate Planes) and I consider all aspects of Minions to be a very bad idea (including Despicable Me).

No, it's just reminiscent of the John Lasseter story and it shows how that is still true today.  Toy Story 4 cannot be messed up.  But it also shows that we, the fandom, aren't the most important people here anymore.  We're not the core market, so sometimes it's important to step back a bit, if you see what I'm saying.

I can really relate to both this story and the infamous airport story Lasseter's been talking about for years. I have a photo of myself as a toddler with my Buzz and Woody toys. I used to take these guys everywhere, and used to act out the movies with my toys. I remember lining them up in front of Woody with Mr. Mike beside him, as well as making cardboard towns. These films meant a lot to me, not just as a kid, but as a teenager. It's what got me into some of my favorite things today, such as Star Wars (since there were many references to it throughout the franchise). I really hope Toy Story 4 lives up to the standards of the trilogy, and I personally have high hopes for it after seeing Finding Dory.
