Pixar Post - T.J.
Hello everyone,

[Pixar+Post+-+Toy+Story+of+Terror-1]

Coming up soon, we're going to be interviewing an animator that worked on Toy Story of Terror! We're not going to tell you who yet (since we want it to be a surprise), but if you had a chance to ask an animator anything about their experience working on Pixar's first 30-minute special, what would it be?

We will take a selection of our favorite questions from you and ask them on our upcoming interview. So, what are you waiting for, ask away!!

Thanks for doing this Pixar Post! My question for the super talented Pixar Animation Animator is: Was the animation quota on 'Toy Story of Terror' different than on a feature film? If you were expected to produce more animation in a shorter amount of time, what kind of shortcuts/compromises did you have to make?

What is it like working with these legendary characters? How is the process of making a special different from a feature?

This is fueling my dream to become one, "How did you get to Pixar? Any tips for a young person aiming to get there?"

As an aspiring Pixar animator (age 16) I have a craving to create animated films now! I have experimented with making short animated film then posting them to YouTube, but it takes a long time just to create one. What 2d animation software do you suggest?

Why was Al from Al's Toy Barn cut from the script? Were storyboards made using him, concept art, or a cg model?

If I may, I have a couple more burning questions (along with my Animation quota one) (hopefully these aren't too geeky!)

1. At Pixar must animators block in stepped mode, or is any method allowed? If any method, must it at least be presented in stepped mode during dailies?

2. Must animators present their work in dailies ...daily? Whether they are comfortable with it or not? Or do you get to wait 'till you're a bit more comfortable with it? well...as comfortable as showing work in progress to your team can be...which is probably not very...

3. Lastly, is the cereal at the cereal bar free? ...How about the milk?

Thank you so much!

Oh, okay, sorry one last question (you can ignore that silly one about the cereal...tho I am curious about that!)

Just wondering what the typical work hours are like there (9-6?) and how often is overtime required?

Thank you!!!

I would ask:
Who are your inspirations in animation?
Who are some of your favorite characters from Toy Story of Terror?
What scenes did you work on?
Do you have any tips for anyone that would like to become an animator of just work at Pixar? (Like me)
How long have you worked at Pixar?
What is your favorite thing at Pixar?
Do you have any interesting stories about your job as an animator.

How was it different animating the Iguana from other animals?

Hi Pixar Post! Me again (sorry if I'm coming back too often) I just thought I'd throw in one more question since this may be my last chance...hope you don't mind.

While Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios are two separate companies, they also seem to sort of have this brother/sister dynamic as in they are part of the same family (which I find very cool). How easy or hard or even possible is it to jump from one company to the other? We've seen John Kahrs, as well as others I'm unfortunately forgetting at the moment, move from Pixar to Disney. Has any Disney animators moved into Pixar? And In order to move is it like transferring or does that person need to apply like any one else (and if so is that frowned upon?...)

I hope these questions aren't too serious in nature! These are just some things I never hear asked and am dying to know. Thanks again very much!

What was the biggest part of the story that got cut?

How did you adjust to making the story so it fits into half an hour, with suspenseful parts in the story where the commercial breaks were?

What development did the new characters like Old Timer, Pez Cat, and Combat Carl go through, and did you help design any?

What are the differences in the overall vibe at the studio making a television special versus a feature film?

Are you kidding - come back as often as you'd like and ask as many questions as you'd like - I can already tell you we're going to use a few of yours!! In the meantime, I can answer one of the earlier questions you asked about the cereal bar. I have been there, I have seen it, and was even offered to have some cereal if I wanted!! I can verify that without a doubt it is free and that there are about 20 different kinds of cereal available 24 hours a day. There are also a ton of different kinds of milk available - whether you want skim, whole, almond, soy...whatever your liking, it's there and it's awesome!!

So cool! Thank you T.J. So lucky you got to visit!

That's awesome Pixar does that. I feel like cereal gives me that boost when I'm low on energy nowadays, healthier than coffee or Red Bull too. Having free cereal of all types available 24/7 would definitely help keep me happy. Very smart of them!
