I know this is a little bit embarrassing to post on a site like this (as I do have this fetish but mostly try to keep it a secret, which again I'm embarrassed to reveal on here), but let's get right to the point.
There's usually a gag that Disney does rarely so often, in which the character either gets fat or inflated (which has happened before in the past), most of the time it's mostly the male characters that gets the treatment (but female characters have been getting it as of lately), but for some random reason whenever Disney releases a film (whether it's part of just Disney, or Disney/Pixar as a whole) on the 8th year of a decade, a random character (or in some cases, the main character) gets fat or bloated up for a scene or two, here are some notable instances:
1988- Who Framed Roger Rabbit- I assume you all probably know what iconic scene I'm talking about as it happens at the very beginning of the film.
1998- A Bug's Life- This one usually passes by most people, but when Flik was in a bar searching for warriors to help him, a random male mosquito bloats after drinking a large amount of blood (technically it's females that drink blood, not the males (again I had a feeling Disney/Pixar felt that having a female bloat was a bit too much to take in at the time).
2008- Wall-E- This one technically shouldn't count as the humans were already shown to be fat the moment we're introduced to them, however it is rather notable as the chair from this film ends up in Disney Infinity 3.0 as a rideable vehicle (which turns the entire Disney/Pixar cast into the immobile blobs from this film).
2018-???- Here we have 2 films coming out, Incredibles 2 (which is the main focal point of this thread), and Wreck-it Ralph 2 (with the internet being the main theme, that wouldn't be a shocker considering what we find there on a daily basis).
The only times Disney/Pixar broke this trend was in 2004 (The first Incredibles film, again this doesn't count as Bob and Helen were rather already chunky when we see them again post-Glory Days (moreso Bob than Helen) and in 2013 (Monsters University, via the Glow Urchins).
So will Incredibles 2 continue the random character expansion during the lucky #8 year of the decade? (hopefully not, in my opinion because having a scene like that would derail the theme of the sequel's direction a bit)
Well we do have some hints to this if we go by what the people behind the movie are saying:
Bird mentioned that the Parrs would have new technology upon moving into their new house (which would no doubt be a decent but vague hint to a possible expansion scene, plus in the Incredibles universe, anything is possible tech-wise, granted with the Parrs having superpowers themselves, they don't need new tech at all (unless it's for using to keep Jack-Jack out of trouble).
Bird also mentioned that some of the 25 new superheroes will be good to even great enough to compete with the Incredibles in terms of keeping Metroville safe (which is I also assume is the main reasoning for the Parrs to go back underground as they don't want to face the competition, sans Helen), but he also mentioned that some...won't be as great (indicating that some of them are expected to be just minor gag characters at best (a superhero with inflation-based powers is definitely a gag I can't see them passing up on, the gag would be top-notch if the super can't control his or her abilities which leads his/her power to accidentally inflate other people who come in contact with them.)
But if it's a main character of the family or one of the newer characters well, we have some options:
Mr. Incredible is ruled out (seeing as he already went through the fat joke gag in the first film, seeing that again on the same character would be rather redundant, although it would be a nice callback to the first film in a way.)
Mrs. Incredible (however you want to call her alter-ego), has by far the highest chances of getting this treatment (about a good 50/50% so we might either get one or not with her), not only does she have this weakness in canon (as most rubbery superheroes tend to do, but is rarely used in the comic genre), and she's very popular in that department herself and is capable of using this capability if she wanted to, and with her being the main focus this go around (and if they want to repeat the fat joke gag on a different character), Helen would be the top choice I can't see Disney/Pixar or even Bird passing up on, if they do pass on it with her, I'll be very surprised.
Violet Parr "shudders", has about a 0%-to a good-15-25% chance to get this treatment (if we go by the deleted scenes from the Vowellet special), Violet hates being thin (or so she says with her new personality being at the forefront, so this might be moot with the new direction Violet's heading), and with the hints Bird gave off on what "hi-jinks" we can expect from the Parr family inside their new house with the new gadgets (why do they even need gadgets in the first place?), Bird might pull a fast one and do the fat joke gag on Violet (similar to what had happened with Helen in that infamous mirror scene), granted I have a feeling Disney/Pixar would get a ton of heat for this, knowing how popular Violet is with the female crowd, especially the younger girls (similar to what had happened with Daphne from that one Scooby Doo movie that came out a few years ago).
Dash, has a decent chance (if him and Violet are fighting over a gadget that causes a character to expand), but with the way they are going with his character, it seems he'll only be a gag character when inside the household, rather than the other way around.
Insert random new superhero, 50/50% like Mrs. Incredible, it depends on what Bird wants to do and if he wants to include a character with that inflation expansion superpower or not.
So what do you guys think? Will we get an expansion scene in this film or not? (please be gentle on the comments).
