Ok guys, as you all know Walt Disney Animation Studio's 55th animated feature, Zootopia comes out this Friday. So I decided to create this topic, that way for all you guys who have seen Zootopia, you can write what you thought about the film, give the film a review, etc. Also spoilers are allowed as this is a spoiler thread.

I had the pleasure of seeing Zootopia 2 weeks ago at a pre-screening. I will give a detailed review when more people see it on this forum as I like to be on the same page.

But here is a short review.

Zootopia was a GREAT film.

Disney has created a pixar-like world with breathtaking visuals and mind blowing complexities. The 2 main characters are as rich as can be. The jokes are genuinely funny, clever and respect child's' minds (no fart or poop jokes). The movie offers many thought provoking parallels to the human society that really makes us question oUr humanity. I thought using animals as a metaphor to preach about racism and stereotypes was a genius idea that was never too spoon-fed or obvious. I only have one little flaw with the film, the last 30 minutes follow a very cliche formula that has been done way too many times. (Not the plot per say, but the formula in which the plot is resolved) and i found myself predicting so much towards that last act. Overall Zootopia in an extremely fun movie with clever humor, great characters, fantastic world, and a morale that is all too real and significant to the real world.

Comparing it to Disney's new era. (Bolt, Tangled, Wreck It Ralph, Frozen, Big Hero 6) I would say its my second favorite after Tangled, although I still don't know if I like it more than Wreck It Ralph.

9.2/10

P.S- Without spoiling, keep your eyes out for a hilarious and genius joke pertaining to Disney's last couple of films. Idk if I would call it a easter egg. But you will definitely know what I'm talking about when you see!

It's toooooday, I'm so happy! I'll post a spoiler free reaction after the movie, because I don't want to post spoilers and have someone accidentally see them. And when I do post spoilers I'll post a few sentences of filler beforehand and then warn everyone, since I was spoiled about what happened to Bing Bong because the mobile forum displays the first few sentences in the latest post even before you click on the topic.

Hey, everyone, I just got back from seeing it and it's time for my spoiler free review!
This was a brilliantly animated movie with a real world message about discrimination, set in a colorful and carefully developed world with a diverse cast of characters. It was a thrilling plot led by two characters with heartwarming chemistry, Judy and Nick. It's a nicely plotted whodoneit with a twist, and it's not afraid to slow down and speed up as needed. The characterization of the two main characters was touching, and it's fun seeing their relationship blossom. It'll leave you guessing until the end--unless you're observant like my mom was! But she didn't call it till late on the movie.
This movie has a huge chance of taking home the Oscar for animated films this year. It's very well done. I'm sold, I'm a fan. I'm happy to love it as much as Big Hero 6 [smile]
Now there's a very light spoiler below, so proceed with caution.
I think I understand what Luis meant about the last 30 minutes; it didn't bother me personally, but it reminded me of how Monsters, Inc was resolved.

OK so WDAS (Walt Disney Animation Studios) has been on a roll with their movies recently like Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, Big Hero 6. This film is no different Zootopia is another fantastic film from WDAS. The two leads of the film Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are fantastic and are a great duo, I loved seeing their chemistry grow. Not to mention the humor, this film features humor that is much more than poo and fart jokes, and that is very funny. But perhaps the greatest and MOST SURPRISING part of this film was really how mature it was. This film has a fantastic message, about common stereotypes used a lot in today's common society. This film is absolutely fantastic. Also there are tons of references to WDAS's past films and upcoming films in this film. Not to mention, the ending is fantastic. Now originally I was going to write a spoiler review on this film, but honestly after seeing it, I don't want to spoil it, I want you guys to go out and see it and watch it and experience all the surprises (because there is a lot of them). I don't have really any major problems with the film, other than the fact that the beginning of the film was a little bit slow, but just like Inside Out it became faster-paced as the film continued. This film is so great that I think I like it as much as Inside Out. The score by Micheal Giaccohni, is really catchy, the animation is fantastic (it's Disney so the animation is always top), and the characters are great. I already said I loved Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps. But I also loved Flash, Mr. Big, Clawhauser and Chief Bogo, not to mention characters that barely got any screen-time like Judy's loud neighbors. The world-building of Zootopia was also fantastic, I want to visit Zootopia in real life!It is really a great film, and I definitely think that you guys should see it. I give Zootopia an A+. This is a great film, and I was surprised by how mature it was, and I think it definitely deserves all the critical praise it is receiving.

I thought this was the most original movie that Disney has made in a long long time!
Like nothing I've ever seen before. It was as if Dreamworks "Madagascar" meet "The busy world of Richard Scarry" (for those of you old enough to remember those books and the show) mixed together in a beautiful world of color and imagination full of beautiful truths about diversity for all of us to learn!
There was only one thing I started asking myself about halfway through and I was expecting an answer but I never feel like a really got one... (I don't think this is a spoiler but if you guys think it is feel free not to answer and we can talk about it in a few weeks) But what does the predators eat in Zootopia?
Just some food for thought... (Cue eye roll here) let me know if I missed something!

So, Julie and I saw the film over the weekend and it was another great movie. My review will have spoilers in it, so please read only if you want some details discussed. Overall, I give it a 9 out of 10.

---------REVIEW (which contains spoilers is below)------------

I really was blown away by the animation. Excellent characters - Nick and Judy (and heck, all the supporting cast), was wonderfully designed. I don't have anything negative I could say regarding the characters or their vocal cast...which I frankly wondered how I would like Ginnifer and Jason. The fur was AMAZING and so realistic looking, the team did a wonderful job. As always, I have to talk about the lighting and it was also superb - so great how they used warm, glowing colors on Judy's farm to show how safe and homely it feels so that way when she goes into the world, there are more cool tones and shadows (think of her entering her apartment for the first time). They also did a great visual representation of the walking into and out of sun/shadows (to show struggle and success) which Monsters U did a ton of. The best example of this is the scene where Judy is talking to Nick at the very end in the tunnel. It starts with both of them in the sun, then Judy walks into the shadows as she pours her heart out apologizing for her actions and attitude...and then walks out of the angled shaft of light (and into the sun) when she finally leans into Nick to hug him (subconsciously displaying that Nick forgave her).

The jokes were on par and tasteful, the soundtrack was wonderful and definitely saw Giacchino stretching his wings again. There was a ton of funky notes that hearkened back to The Incredibles at time (in songs like Grey’s uh-Mad At Me). The other film I thought the soundtrack pulled a few moments from were from Inside Out. Songs like Hopps Goes (After) The Weasel (at 0:58) completely reminded me of moments of the Abstract Thought (0:39) scene (the hectic pacing, guitar riff and drums were similar). Nothing wrong with that - just pointing it out. Also, moments in Nick of Time really (REALLY) take inspiration from Tears of Joy on Inside Out’s score as well.

Easter Egg items...I did think it was funny that they reversed the pronunciation of Weaselton from Frozen. You know....how the Duke of Weaselton in Frozen keeps getting people to say Weaselton and not Weasel Town. In this movie, the weasel corrects them to say Weasel Town instead of Weaselton! Good one!

So, I don't recall all the bootleg movies on the table with the weasel...but let's start listing them...what were they?
  • Gigantic was Giraffic
  • Wreck it Ralph was Wreck It Rhino
  • Tangled was Wrangled
  • Big Hero 6 was Pig Hero 6
  • Moana was Meowana
  • Frozen was Floatzen
Is that all of them - or do they all seem correct? (Going off of memory and internet searches).

Issues - So, I only had two small issues.
  1. I wish they didn't do the same twist ending that was done in Wreck it Ralph (King Candy being Turbo), Frozen (with Hans) and Big Hero 6 (Prof. Callaghan)...where the good guy that they build the audience up to trust at the beginning becomes the bad guy at the end. I think it's just been done too much at this point and I need a new twist to feel really fresh.
  2. I don't like when everything is wrapped up at the end and then it goes to the pop song (Try Everything) over the sweeping shots for the ending scene. I know this one is just personal opinion overload...but I just don't prefer movies that end in a song. Again, I think it's overused and I'd prefer it not to end that way. I like a slower pan back into the closing scene where we hear real dialogue of the character wrapping it up. Again, personal opinion and I know that the song idea works and makes for an uplifting feeling for the general audience so I get why it's done.
So, did you see it - thoughts?

I was writing my review as you were writing yours...the Richard Scarry comment is a great comparison for the worlds!

In regards to the predators, I took it as the fact that predators no longer ate meat as they had evolved past it...but I guess it really was just that they weren't going to eat prey at any random moment. Good question!

Fantastic review, TJ. I did notice though that for the bootleg movies on the table for the weasel, Moana was actually MOOANA (like a cow.).

---------Spoilers Below-------------------

I loved the ending when Judy and Nick are going after the super fast car only to see that it was Flash! I thought that was super funny! I agree with you that the ending dance party/credits was really cliche. It is really cliche for animated films, nowadays to end with dance parties, but this one didn't seem to bother me as much. Also Richard Scarry is a fantastic comparison to the characters and worlds of Zootopia!

Also TJ what do you like more Zootopia or The Good Dinosaur? While I loved The Good Dinosaur, I thought Zootopia was better.

**Take caution, there may be some vague spoilers in this comment**
In reply to TJ's comments about the twist bad guys, I do agree, but I also think that in a mystery plot like this it makes sense to include that sort of surprise, seems - nice villain. I guess this is the writers' way to fight back against the black and white for the evulz villains Disney used to be known for, but Pixar did these sort of twists several times before Disney started doing it. I was wondering, TJ, how do you feel about Waternoose, Stinky Pete, Muntz, and Lotso?
I guess Waternoose was one of those villains before this type of villain started becoming a thing. Muntz follows the twist villain archetype to a T. But with Lotso, I think it was obvious from the get-go, and you at least knew something wasn't right about Sunnyside very early on, and Lotso's villainy didn't show up right at the end like with Waternoose, Callaghan, and the other Disney surprise villains. Plus Lotso purposefully deceived them at first--unlike with Callaghan, who never intended the main character to get involved in the first place and who never really felt the need to act, and the villain in Zootopia, who genuinely did feel a camaraderie with Judy. But yeah, I still think Hans was extremely out of the blue.

What a amazing movie, i love it now and it's so great

My review has spoilers so read carefully:

-------------------------------------------------------
Im not a fan of what they did to Bellwether, i was starring to like her, but i knew something was up after they name her mayor, and it couldn't be Lionheart since he was already in jail

But in all, i really love the animation, the story was great and well told, the characters and their voice cast looks amazing, and it's already on my top 10 WDAS films

The score though, Giacchino scoring a Disney film, what a surpise, every part of the score was amazing, and Try Everything sounds perfect

My favorite scene has to be the DMV, i mean, those sloths, no wonder those animals seem worried
--------------------------------------------------------

Really love it, guys, i hope we do this again for Moana soon
